Went to Shanahan's for lunch for an anniversary treat. We ordered off the set menu €45/head with 3 options for each course. I was slightly disappointed with the offerings for the 1st course as it was different to that advertised on the website and ended up ordering the ceaser salad, which while lovely is still just a salad on a rather expensive lunch menu. My husband had the salmon bilini which he enjoyed and the breads that came prior to the starter were amazing. In fact the bread is so good it is hard not to fill up on it so be careful! The steak main was fantastic and came with onion rings, really lovely spinach and potatoes. Both deserts were great as well. Wine list was extensive and petit fours and complimentary champagne was a lovely end to the meal. The service was impeccable and we really enjoyed the afternoon.

Tried the early bird offer, what a great deal. €45pp, off table by 8.30pm There is a choice of three starters, mains and desert. Had starter of smoked salmon on pancake, it was a v generous portion and it was v good. there was a soup and salad on offer. Mains were 6oz fillet steak, 8oz sirloin stake and fish. Steak was v good, served with mashed potato, spinach and fried onion, generous portions. desert was cheesecake, which was good. coffee was also served, although no petit fours as per menu!! Service as always is good and non-intrusive. bill was presented in order that we vacate table on time, although it did not appear that the table was needed!! Worth a visit, good value, great food and nice atmosphere, it was quite this night

I tend to visit Shanahans only two / three times a year and one of these occasions is always at Christmas when a gang of us get together for our annual Christmas Lunch. Since 2004 this has been in Shanahans. I retuned there in October for a meal with my wife and as usual the food was fantastic. The bread at the start, the onion rings and the steaks are always great. However they really need to cop on with the prices and realise that when every other restaurant in the country is fighting for business they cannot continue charging exorbitant prices for a steak, regardless of how good it is. There are several other establishments close by with quality exceptional quality steak at half the price of Shanahans. I had assumed that they would have reduced prices but was amazed to still see starters at €20 plus and an 8 oz Steak at almost €50. This is before ordering any additional rings etc!! I will admit the food is great but no greater then several other city centre restaurants. Needless to say we have decided to move the party of 16‘s Christmas Lunch to another venue in Dublin 2 who are offering some value and trying to entice people into the restaurant. Shanahans, great grub but please cop on! It may explain why the restaurant was almost empty the night we attended.

I never thought I'd actually eat here, I always thought it was far too expensive (though always wanted to anyway!) It was such a nice surprise then, when my father visited from the US & took my husband & I there for because he fancied "a great steak". A great steak indeed! Though we hadn't planned on it, we all went for the Early Bird. There was a good selection, and the Petit Filet was more than enough when you have three courses plus side dishes. The food was divine, I couldn't fault a thing. The service was top notch. The wine was fabulous (though the wine will push your bill up), and as a bonus, the waiter knew the wine list inside out. I had thought it might be a little 'stuffy', but it was nothing of the sort - we all found the atmosphere very relaxed and calm.. and we're already looking forward to our next visit back!

Have gone here a few times for the early bird/pre theatre menu. A couple of times with the girls and once with my husband. Fantastic food. I've always gone for the Petit Filet steak which is cooked to perfection and comes with lovely creamed spinach and onion rings. Every time I've been there the food has been outstanding and good value for money for the ordinary individual at 45 euro for 3 courses. Once the hot chocolate fondant wasn't on the menu and the chef did it especially for us. One complaint my husband would have was he ordered the mussels for starter and there was quite a few unopened ones which should have been taken off before the dish before they came out. When he mentioned it the waiter said they were cooked but just didn't open! We explained you couldn't eat those ones. He didn't understand.

Excellent service in beautiful restaurant but food is absolutely not worth the price. Scallops for starter were overdone and did not taste particularly fresh. I had a fillet steak for main course which for the price was not worth it. Main courses come without anything accompanying it so you also have to order very pricey side dishes which aren't particularly good quality vegetables. Worth it to visit once for the setting and good for a business dinner/lunch but will not be returning.

We were able to visit Shanahan's again this year and ate in the downstairs bar. The atmosphere is very comfortable. The three of ate filet mignons and a rib eye steak that we all agreed were superb. The service was exceptional and we couldn't ask for a better meal in Dublin. Well worth the price!!

What a splendid experience this was. My favourite clients took my husband and I here to celebrate a successfully concluded deal and we were treated like royalty. Very JFK / Chesapeak Bay. Certainly American Colonial style and with a nautical flair. The Staff were pristine, like attentive toy soldiers - but friendly and affable - Oh and the food!! By far the very best steak I've ever had - bar none anywhere else in the world too! My husband had scallops to start (they were a little on the small side but cooked perfectly so they melted in the mouth) and I had crab salad. With our steaks we had chips (as you do and they were super) and the onion rings which were very delicate and moreish! Excellent selection of wine (obviously!), brandies and Irish coffees saw us tripping out the door close to midnight with a cheery good night and eager to go again! 10/10 Folks.

Yet again this place does not disappoint. Had the pleasure of being in here last week with the missus for a special occasion and left raving about the place yet again. Everything about Shanahan’s is top notch, from the greeting at the door on a rainy night to the final farewell afterwards. A trip downstairs for a glass of bubbly is a must. We were shown to lovely table upstairs in the back room. It was quiet enough on the night, though we were early. I had the T-bone and the missus went for the sirloin, both were fantastic, cooked perfectly as ordered and came with the, always great, onion rings and hand cut fries. Served with a lovely Rioja. Despite best efforts couldn't quite polish off the baked orio cheesecake. Staff were really nice though one or two were a bit grumpy looking, maybe it was the weather!! Overall a fantastic evening and as always a restaurant to keep on top of the 'must come again' list

had a great meal here it is the first restaurant that actually know how a medium rare steak should be cooked. we went there early and a a drink in the oval bar they dont have a great section of beers but what they have are nice and different. the meal was fantastic and was worth every penny in my mind not that i would go there every week or anything, for a special occasion only. the only problem that i had with the place is the amount of people barking on about the recession which didn't help the atmosphere in my mind.

Shanihan's food reputation precedes it so I expected to be disappointed but I wasn't. The restaurant decor reminded me of an elegant front room. Dress code is definitely smart casual. It wasn't packed for an early Wednesday evening but it was ticking over. We arrived early so I would've liked to have been offered the option of having a drink in The Oval Bar downstairs but we were ushered straight to our table. The waiting staff here are exceptional. Warm, friendly and knowledgable - happy to give advice about what's in the food or what the wine's like. With the drinks came delicious warm cheese and onion bread and chilli muffins. Scrumptious. I had the early bird menu, my partner decided just to have the main. There's an excellent choice between steak & fish on the early bird menu and at €55 it's excellent value for money. Also the main dish on the early bird comes with three side dishes so there's absolutely no need to order sides for the other person. I had mussels on a sizzling platter for starters. This was good but I felt the mussels in their shells on a hot plate made them a little dry. For mains I had the scallops and my partner had the 8oz fillet. My scallops were perfect - not the slightest hint of rubber. My partner's steak was excellent - well done as requested with a tasty gravy. I've had steak elsewhere that's just as good though and I'm not sure that any steak is worth €36 but that's a personal choice. The sides are scrummy - creamed mash, creamed spinach and a huge tower of onion rings. Easily enough for four people. I had the cheese selection for dessert with homemade crackers - wonderful. The meal with a half bottle of Pouilly Fume, drinks & mineral water came to €162. For a special occasion, you can't go wrong with Shanahans. Of course the excellent steak is expected but it's all the little extras that make this a superb dining experience. My only little critique would be that front of house staff could be warmer.

went to celebrate a special occasion, first time and hope it won't be my last! Had a couple of drinks first in the very busy Oval Office and then up to the main floor. Started with a wonderful starter of scallops - huge portion, succulent and full of favour, followed by the petit filet with a topping of fois gras - perfect! My husband had the smoked salmon plate to start and the larger filet mignon, again done to perfection. We had a wonderful but pricey red, and paid the extra for the veg. - really, could do with just including in the price of the meal! The bread at the start was fantastic also. I was so full I could only manage half of the petit filet and a cup of tea! Wonderful, but very expensive.

Had dinner here last night and it was amazing as always. We went for the early bird menu starter, main course, dessert, coffee €45. Exceptional value as there is a fillet option for main course and cheese board on the dessert menu and included in the price was 3 side orders for the table. The fillets were cooked to perfection and everything from start to finsh was delicious.

My fifth visit here and I look forward to my next visit already. On tonights visit I was welcomed back by the waiter who had served me the last time which | thought was a nice touch. We were also served by two other waiters tonight the first of which was as pleasant and efficient as the one mentioned above. The second however was surly and could do with learning how to smile and be a little bit more interactive with patrons. The food as always was excellent. We were firstly offered beautiful homemade bread with some muffins. For starters I chose a soup whilst my companion had a salad. We both had steaks for mains which were perfectly cooked to order. To accompany the steaks we had whipped potato and a small portion of onion strings. The whipped potato is one of the nicest I have ever tasted. As always and as mentioned before the onion strings were vast in portion size. Being so full we skipped desert. Shanahan's is a lovely restaurant great for a any occasion and every visit there is special. Their special menu offers great value if you dine early in the evening. Its location is very central and it is proximal to the Grafton street shopping area. Most Dublin theatres are within walking distance. Try Shanahan's you wont be disappointed.

Myself & a friend went to Shanahans for the €45 menu and the food was exceptional. I had the ceasar salad to start which was a good portion size, really tasty with lots of parmasean cheese & my friend had the trio of salmon which I was assured was gorgeous. For mains I had a 6oz petit filet & my friend had the 8oz strip sirlion. both were cooked to perfection, & the sides were delicious, creamy mash, spinach & onion strings. I have to say that I actually couldnt finish my steak! For dessert I had the cheese board, the cheese was lovely but the crackers/biscuits were of the blue cheese varierty, my friend had the chocolate sponge dessert which was delicious. We had a bottle of red wine which was €29 and went very nicely with our dinner. Overall I will definately be returning to Shanahans & the €45 menu is well worth it.

Visited Shanahans for the first time with my girlfriend on our anniversary. I had been advised that it was pricey and went in with the knowledge that I would be paying top doller and was so hoping that the food would live up to the price tag. Well I was not dissapointed it was fantastic. From the bread hand cut at the table (Don't Fill up on bread its very easy to do but you will regret it later), to the fantastic selection of sorbets & ice creams for dessert it was perfection. I had the Crab starter & my girlfriend had the soup, both were perfect. The top prise however must go to my fillet steak which you could have eaten with a spoon. Do not be tempted to get the large portion of onion strings or fries as you will have more then enough in the regular size portion. The large which I saw being delevered to another table oppsite could have been enough for 4 people or more. The only gripe I might have was that the atmosphere was ruined by a loud and obnoxious crowd at the table oppsite but there was nothing the restaurant could do about that really. All in all total perfection and I will return no doubt.

Amazing food, completely worth paying a little extra. Considering places considerably worse than here will charge in the region of €30 for a steak, this place actually becomes something akin to value. Main course was so large and filling that it was the only thing needed (apart from a bottle of wine and an amazing martini). Ordered the filet mignon with foie gras, which was without doubt the best steak I have ever eaten. With this (and four people to a table) only two side orders were needed. Mash and their onion strings. Two sides did four people, but in truth those onions could have provided for many more, I think there is a smaller portion available, think we should have ordered this. The service was fantastic, our waiter was so attentive, and knowledgeable and helpful, all as expected from reputation, but still such a joy! There was nothing I did not like about this place, apart from the fact that I cannot eat here more often because of budgetary reasons.

Having looked forward to this visit I was disappointed when I went for a special occasion. Overpriced and underwhelming is my lasting impression. While the steaks themsleves were very good, they aren't worth nearly 50 euro each. We ordered a few sides and unknowingly were presented with large portions of each, for which we were charged double. The bread, which I've read many great reviews of, was very good but not good enough for me to return to pay such exorbitant prices. At 100 euro a head for a main course, some sides and wine its up there with tasting menus but the menu doesn't deliver. I certainly won't be returning.

Went last Wednesday for the early bird for my partners birthday. 45 euro for 3 courses, including tea and coffee and 3 sides, great value. We had the shrimp and salmon for starters, both had steaks with sides we couldn't even finish and we had the fondant and cheesecake to finish...so much food! and all delicious, service was exceptional, and we even got complimetary prosecco as we were there for a birthday, will definatley return for a treat soon!

Superb, top notch, stunning food and service as always. They accomodated several changes of date (due to my eating partner's availability) with good grace. They accomodated several requests on the night in question (minor enough, however each was accepted and honoured with equal good grace). The food was the usual... uber-fresh, perfectly cooked, amazingly presented, tasty, delicious. The staff were the usual... friendly, kind, accomodating, chatty, the right amount of attentive but not obsequious or sycophantic. I think their Appletinis are the best in Dublin, their Guinness apparently also perfect, their mussels probably the freshest I've ever eaten, the steaks cooked perfectly and served exactly as they should be, the side orders as tasty as ever... No stars removed for them this time I've eaten there, or the number of other times I've been there... not cheap but an amazing experience everytime...

We decided to eat in the Oval Office downstairs because its less stuffy than the main restaurant. Its a lovely cosy spot for dinner for 2. We started with the Shrimp cocktail which was delicious. We also received a loaf of piping hot crispy cheese bread and a corn bread cake. Too good for words. Then the mains. Steak of course. A petit filet for my wife and the filet Mignon ( bigger ) for me. The menu explains exactly what way a steak is cooked so you can ask for the cooking that suits you. After discussion with our charming server we opted for Medium Rare Steaks with potato mash and onion strings. We had a bottle of Spanish Rec to wash it down. The steaks were wonderful and enormous. Cooked to perfection just like it said on the menu. No overcooking here !!. A great meal with great service. Not cheap , but worth every cent. Will definately be back soon.

Special, expensive but special. We ate like royalty, we were treated like royalty, you get what you pay for. The bread is definately the 'tastes like more' variety, the mussels and salmon starters were devine, my husband's steak was the 'best ever' and my dinner of fries and the onion rings sides was heaven! No space for dessert unfortunately and my only gripe would be the price of the wine list but I guess they don't want 'regular' people all the time. No sign of a recession here on this Saturday night....Maybe they could open the menu a bit more but I guess it is a steak/seafood house...........

Highly recommended! I was taken here by my partner for a birthday treat and all I can say is that it was easily the best birthday present I have ever received! At Shanahan's you are treated as a friend, not a customer. As soon as we walked through the door we were warmly welcomed and brought down to the Oval Office for a pre-dinner drink as we were early. We had the best Bloody Mary I've tasted for a long long time and an Appletini that didn't quite measure up to the aforementioned Bloody Mary. In the warm comfortable surroundings of the bar we perused our menus, relaxed and chatted with the super friendly staff. Finally it was time for dinner and we were led upstairs. As we weren't in the mood for wine we ordered 2 more excellent Bloody Marys and chose the small Caeser Salad and a crab and potato dish to start. We were also served some excellent bread. It was warm, crusty and delicious. My salad was exquisite, the portion was huge. My partners crab and potato rosti dish was not quite as successful, it was a bit over-coloured in places and he could taste burnt potato which overpowered the crab. For our mains I had the sirloin and he had rib-eye. Both cooked to perfection and perfectly delicious. Our sides consisted of fabulous onion rings, fries and oven roasted cherry tomatoes. We could have easily done without the fries. To finish we were brought complimentary petit fours and champagne as my partner had mentioned my birthday when booking. Such a lovely touch and really appreciated. Our lovely waitress was a star all night but her french male counterpart was a bit standoffish. Overall, dining at Shanahans is an experience I would recommend to anyone, I cannot wait to return.

Our fifth visit to Shanahans. Each visit gets top marks. When you are feeling more like eating at home because of an average restaurant experience which let you down put Shanahan's top of your list for the next time and you wont be disappointed. The main courses are center stage so be careful not to load up on starters. We had the mussles which are a nice light starter after delicious breads you are served on seating. I ordered the 12oz fillet and my wife order the black sole. We shared and did a nice surf/turf combination. For sides we got a small portion of the onion strings and the creamed spinich which is to die for. A great cab sauv to recommend is the Luigi Bosco. The wine service was outstanding. No room for desert as usual. I think if you are in a group of 4 plus then order desert to share as they are delicious. We can't eat like this weekly or even monthly without doctors consent. Shanahan's is a special experience. The food is rich and the best quality. You will experience outstanding service. Overall you get what you pay for and we have been fortunate to leave extremely satisfied each time.

I dined here on the recommendation of my sister, and i was not disappointed. Being one of two couples when we arrived the waiters were very attentive, filling our glasses both water and wine and slicing freshly baked bread, the smell of which leaving you wanting more. The food was nicely presented, shrimp for him, salad for me to start, and our steaks (the only reason for dining there) were excellent and perfectly portioned with sides but I was a little too full at the end to finish my dessert. Will certainly be back for another early bird, maybe with a larger party for a little more atmosphere...

Went here for my b'day treat & really enjoyed it! Opted for the early bird - the only drawback was the limited starter selection. The steak was absolutely beautiful & the sides portions were quite large suitable for two! Service was good but I would have expected nothing less at this restaurant. Two complimentary glasses of champagne were a great gesture to toast my b'day!

We went for the early bird on a Monday as a special treat and were hugely impressed. The 55euro menu had everything and the steak lived up to the reputation. The waiter was very helpful in choosing a wine. The only shame is that the place was so empty, but what can you expect on a Monday. Beautiful decor and lovely background music pretty much made up for the lack of atmosphere.

updated review - we last visited in 2007 (for a significant birthday). We were back last weekend as we had been given gift vouchers. To be honest, we were disappointed. For the price that is charged, I expect flawless service. A table of three arrived mid-way into our meal and they monopolised our waitress. While she really didn't have a choice (the other guests were very very chatty), she should have indicated to another waiter to look after us. We also thought the decor was tired - there were at least three portable fan heaters in use and a thermostat control has been placed at eye level near to one table rather than hidden. While the food was good, it just doesnt, to my mind, merit the prices.

Ok so it is more expensive then your usual meal. But you get what you pay for. The setting is lovely, the waiter is at the highest standard and the food is devine. You do have to order your meat and potatoes etc seperate as they do not come with the meal. They now have an early bird menu so why not try it now while your getting a true bargain. Is well worth going for that extra special occassion.

We made a reservation based on the rumour that Shanahan's on the Green used a specialised steak cooking appliance - my husband really likes his steak! And we weren't disappointed. Everything was to the highest specs - the staff, the food, the price. The waiter was attentive and gave us excellent advise on the wine and food, and gave us enough reason to come back again before we even ate anything! A complimentary hot loaf and spiced crispy muffin was served before we started. It was so tasty that we nearly finished it off, and at that point we would not have had any room for dinner! My husband had steak, I had scallops and monkfish. Both were delicious. The portions were magnificent. I still cannot get over the size of a "small" portion of onion rings, which could easily feed 6 people. We also shared the cookies and cream cheesecake, which we still had a problem finishing as the slice was so big! All in all, Shanahan's on the Green is well worth the 5 stars given to it on Menupages.ie. And also the € signs.

I've been living in Dublin for a year having lived in the UK and the US. I've been lucky enough to visit Shanahan's several times. The steak's are outstanding, and the food in general is very high quality - backed up by sharp service. The atmosphere can be a little bit stuffy but it's great for a romantic meal. In terms of value for money I can't give it a good mark, the prices are extortionate compared to other top tier Dublin restaurants and I fear that this will remain a "somebody else is paying" option for the foreseeable future. Breaks my heart but there you are.

Say what you like about Shanahan's (and people do), but I've been lucky enough to visit many times (rarely paying, thankfully), and the food and service is simply a cut above. Granted, it's a tad expensive, but even if you need to save up to go just the once, it's worth a splurge. The Oysters Rockefeller to start, Filet Mignon for main, and Bailey's Cheesecake to finish makes for a stagering evening's dining. Do it!

Shanahans is a restaurant for special ocassions. The bread to begin with is just amazing, hot, crusty and delicious. However i would recommend only going for 2 coarses as it is very filling and the bread almost acts like a starter. For mains we both got fillet steaks which were absolutely delicious although mine was slightly overcooked it was forgiven by the quality o the meat and sauce. The chips are tasty and the onions are too. Portions are huge and the deserts are lovely. Drinks are good but expensive. But the restaurant it is you cant help but go for a special ocassion.

I went here for a special occasion with my family for the early bird menu. I wouldn't normally have been able to afford it! It was everything I heard it was going to be... The bread was lovely and warm! The smoked salmon, mussels and spinach salad for starters were fabulous. My mum is still talking about the salad. The steaks we had were just enough and very tasty. All the sides were really yummy. The only comment I would make is that the mains could have been hotter. Desserts were also good and at that stage we were stuffed. Service was very efficient without being overbearing. I would definitely come again.

Went to Shanahans last night for my 30th Birthday. It was the ultimate dining experience! The food, the service and the atmosphere was second to none. I had the muscles for starter and the 12oz fillet stake - it was absolutely divine! The nicest stake I've ever tasted. Would love to be able to afford eating here on a regular basis, but for now, until I win the lotto, I'll have to keep Shanahans for special occasions. I highly recommend Shanahans.

I visited Shanahans for a special occasion, unfortunately it did not live up to my high expectations hearing the great reviews, we arrived for the early bird sitting, which is cheaper than the dinner menu but at €55 a head its not cheap, the starter spinach salad was ok, the steak I ordered medium- well it was more well, and looked burnt, disappointing as I know they were known for the steak! the sides were ok , onion rings a little greasy, over all I wont be running back, I eaten nicer food for less else where!

Went for the early bird, €55 for three courses. Which seems expensive, but when you factor in the steak is normally over €40 is great value. And what an experience. I've never tasted a steak so good in my life and fillet has never tasted the same since. Astounding. The cheese bread and chilli muffin smelled and looked too delicious to resist. The trio of smoked salmon was delightful and wow, the mash and onion strings with the steak were just heavenly. Had a lovely bottle of wine. Dessert wasn't for me, but that was insignificant after the unbelievable steak. Amazing dining experience.

What a treat! Having heard so much about the place I was hoping it wouldn't let me down- and it didn't! From the moment we walked through the door until we left again it was just impeccable! Obviously it is known for the steaks(and they are wonderful), but the service and the sides are what made it really stick out for me. Their mash is incredible, as are the onion strings- I couldn't get enough of them. The wine list was very good too. All in all I can't wait to go back. Super place, you really are made to feel like a star here!

My 2nd dining experience at Shanahan's. The first time I came here was for a really special occasion, we were seated downstairs and I was totally in awe at the amazing service & food. My second experience here was slightly different. We came on a Saturday night which was obviously busier than our previous visit which was a Saturday and our table upstairs wasn't as good as downstairs. My first flaw, not enough staff. Our waiter appeared to be dealing with several tables and we saw very little of him. The food: As delicious as ever, steak cooked as rare as I like it, beautiful starter of salmon. My friend had Caesar salad which was fab. Portions are enormous, I would recommend the Petit Fillet as the Fillet Mignon is enormous and with side dishes can almost be impossible to finish. The desserts....WOW, tasty!! On the bad side, we waited over a half hour for our main courses and then about 15mins for espressos after dessert. We were left with our empty plates on front of us for the duration of the meal which I think is a sign of bad service. The solution would have been to have at least one more person waiting upstairs to inspect tables for such things. We were never asked if everything was OK, had we been asked we probably would have mentioned that we'd been waiting so long between courses. Anyway, I want to end on a good note. I really like this place, I just think for the money that is spent, service could be better. Afterwards we we went down to the Oval Office, I love it down there. It has so much class and is very relaxing to have a drink to top off a tasty meal. I will give it another chance and might come back in the future as the food is great. That bread.......too nice for words!

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and it is such a brilliant idea for a special occasion. The service was impeccable, the portions were enormous (order the small fries, even between 2!) and the fillet mignon was just to die for. it's as good as everyone says. its obviously very expensive, but worth it for the experience. however, given the price, i was a little disappointed with the desserts, only because they weren't amazing, like the rest of the meal. wine list is also incredible. I would definitely recommend this for a celebration!

Dined with my husband. We had been given a voucher. Went on the Early Bird Menu which was the most fantastic value we have had in years. Had a lovely table upstairs overlooking The Green. Very attentive service, especially our waiter. The person who took our order for wine was extremely knowledgeable. Such tender steaks. The Onion Strings were amazing. Loved the loaf of warm bread. I don't eat nuts and I was given an alternative to the icecream on the menu. Asked for the recipe of one of their dishes (won't say which one!) which was written out by the Head Chef and given to me at the end of the meal. All in all a memorable evening.

Went here with my family for my fathers 60th birthday. He is a massive 'Steak and onions' fan so it seemed the logical choice and we were not disappointed. Although a good bit more expensive than you might pay normally, it was worth every penny from the service right thru to the food. We all had a starter, which was a bit of an error as we struggled a bit with the main course, I would say sharing one between two is the way to go! I had told them in advance it was a birthday and at desert time, they brought my dad a selection of desserts and a glass of champagne for everyone at the table. What really impressed me was that they brought some 7up in champagne flutes for the 2 non drinkers at the table, brilliant attention to detail! I would certainly revisit here on special occasions!

Went here with my girlfriend. We both ate from the early bird menu. The starter was fantastic. The main course (Fillet of steak) was cooked very well and you are provided with more then enough side dishes. The deserts were nice if not somewhat filling....! All in all it will be some place that we will be coming back to again.

Celebrated a special occasion here & could not fault the atmosphere and the service. Taken to the very snug bar area to enjoy a pre-dinner drink and perusal of the menu. Every little detail is taken care of by the staff! Excellent wine menu was heightened by beautiful starters. Beware of the steaks! They are very big portions and the need for sides could be questioned - I could not finish my NY strip sirloin and my girlfriend struggled with her filet mignon though. Hers was a lovely cut whereas my sirloin wasn't so. The only downside. Tea, coffee & a lovely glass of port to finish was ideal after a generous champagne presentation for our celebration. Very good value for the environs & the service alone. Recommended.

Went to Shanahan's on Saturday and have to say I was very impressed with the place over all - from the minute you walk in the door you are looked after - definitely be a place I will go back to - I know people complain about the value for money but in fairness when you are going to Shanahans you expect to pay but in my opinion you do get value for money - generous portions felt guilty with the amount of food we sent back 1 in our party had the fillet and said it was like cutting butter - really enjoyed the whole experience

He invented phonetics which was a sensation in the USA but nobody told me that he had also created the finest steak eaterie in Ireland. I was there last Friday night. My wife had a spinach salad for mains. I had a massive 12 oz juicy fat lump of angus beef and a side of onion rings that could feed an army. Fact: A finer steak could not be had. Sean Shanahan I don my hat! My budget for here is ocassional or otherwise I might end up broke but for all important celebrations, big legal cases and anniversaries - you belong here. A fat cigar, a brandy downstairs after your meal and the sheer decedance of it all. Dont miss the steak, onion rings and the bread. Do miss the builders - where did they all go?

Visited Shanahan's with three friends to celebrate the passing of exams and an impending marriage. The service was amazing from the start, with drinks in the bar downstairs before being seated at our table. Both the mussels and the sauteed prawns made excellent starters, backed uo by the complimentary bread. One of our party had an issue with the avocado in the crab dish but enjoyed it overall. The filet mignon with foie gras was excellent, although slightly tastier when served medium rare. The T-Bone was enormous and very good. All of our sides (asparagus, mash, baked potatoes) were excellent as well. The meal was expensive but incredibly satisfying, and the experience was one which will be remembered.

I went to Shanahans for a special night out with a friend and it was amazing. I loved their ritual of bringing warm bread to the table. My only problem, there was so much of this deliciously tasting bread that I was in danger of eating it all. Thankfully I didn't and thoroughly enjoyed my crab and potato sandwich. My filet mignon was cooked to perfection, tasted divine and cutting into it was like cutting butter with a knife. The creamed spinach and shanahan fries which we shared, were even too much for the two of us. We were feeling full but still had the urge to taste dessert so we shared a roulade. The finishing touch to the night was the complimentary sparkling wine and chocolates to mark the occasion we were celebrating. Service was impeccable. This is a great venue for a special occasion, here's hoping I find another one in this lifetime!!!

Came here for my boyfriends graduation. A really great place for a special occasion. Had oysters for starter - delicious. The steaks are just divine (and I am not really a big steak person) and the side orders are huge (you probably only need one between two or three people). Was completely stuffed and could not manage dessert. The place is lovely and they gave us complimentary champagne as it was a special occasion. I would highly recommend this place for a special occasion.

I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday and had the perfect evening there. We had the early bird menu, which considering the prices on the 'regular' menu, it's exceptional value. The service is impeccable and the food was amazing, easily the best steak in Dublin. They brought us out two glasses of champagne at desert for his birthday too. Spent the rest of the evening relaxing in the Oval Office bar downstairs. Overall it was a total success, will make sure we come back for another occasion.

the four of us dinned here for my birthday as a treat, the early bird was a welcome appearance in such a fine establishment, yes its 55.00euro for 4 courses but its also Shanahans, enough said,so that had to be taken advantage of,the dinning room is a large opulent area with loads of private room between the tables, the decor is so pretty yet simple,i started with the split pea and ham soup which had chunks of some of the tastiest ham i have ever tasted and it was in a soup!!the caesar salad is an easy dish to do but this was just one better than anything else as it was just so fresh in every way,the other two guests had the trio of salmon, which i didn't even have to taste as the the smell coming from the plate was just amazing and the satisfied mmmmm's verified that nicely, now as for mains well its Shanahans so we all went for the steak bar one non-meat eater that went for the roast cod wrapped in pancetta which when asked "how was it" she replied "like eating a cloud",the steak for me was a nice size,my knife just glided through it even though i asked for it medium rare and when chewed the meat gave off an explosion of tastes, the sides although simple are so tasty, even there mash potatoes had a lovely cream and herb taste off it that i have never tasted before?as for the service, well it was just perfect,so polite yet relaxed and very attentive without being over powering,i noticed how the waiters demur would actually change as they did there rounds, adapting to the relaxed family table and then again to the more upper class older couples table. There are many restaurants that i build up in my mind before going only to be let down when i leave, but this was just perfect in every way and on all the senses, don't just go here for a treat,go for any reason and take advantage of that early bird!!!

I was brought here recently and was so excited to finally experience Shanahans. It did not disappoint! From the moment we walked through the door, it was just perfect. We were celebrating a special event and it was a group of 10 of us. They accomodated us all at a large roung table which while slightly cramped, was what we wanted. The bread to start with was yummy. I then had the prawn cocktaill which for seafood lovers is a real treat. I'm not a big meat eater, but had to go for a steak while here. I ordered a NY Strip med-well and it was divine. I've never enjoyed meat as much!! We got fries, onion strings, mushrooms, veg, mashed potato and possibly more for sides - all very enjoyable. For dessert I had the chocolate trio I think it was called and it was lovely. Petit fours arrived with the coffee. After dessert the waiters brought over a plate of petit fours with congratulations in chocolate sauce on the plate for the lady we were celebrating as well as Prosecco for all the guests. It was such an enjoyable evening and the experience at Shanahan's made it all the more special. I cannot comment on value for money as the guest menus did not have the prices displayed.

A finer steak I have never had. Cooked perfectly and so so moist. Annoying things include having to order vegetables on the side, and the price. But when someone else is paying, Shanahans is the only place to go!

Positives - there is no doubt that you will not find a better steak and the service is excellent. Negatives - paying for the bread and the bill of €260 (starter, main and desert plus wine) for 2, a bit excessive in my opinion.

The best steak I've ever had - no lie. The onion string were also amazing, my partner and I shared a half portion and there was still some left that we couldn't finish. We also shared a starter and dessert and had more than enough. It wasn't a cheap evening but it was worth it as a treat.

Went to a lunch meeting there today. The staff were extremely professional and friendly. The food was amazing, had the beef with spinach - mouth is still watering! I was in the delightful position of having been invited, therefore I cannot comment on price - which is a lot, but for a treat I'd definitely recommend it.

I have visited this restaurant on a few occasions. Twice for dinner and once for lunch. The lunch price is very reasonable. Dinner, however, is a different story. My main problem, however, with this restaurant is that it discriminates against single diners. When you order a steak, that is all you get. Everything else has to be added to the plate. Thus, steak and a mash sideorder presents an insurmountable challenge for one person. The sides should definitely be reduced by half to allow room for dessert. The steak prices and sizes could also be looked at.

I took my partner to Shanahans on Tuesday night for his birthday. He's from Glasgow and this was his first visit. He was really very impressed with everything including the steak. I did try to warn him not to have a starter but I couldn't hold him back. He had the pea and bacon soup and of course the loaf of bread. On to the mains and 2 steaks med/rare the to die for crispy onions and cream spinach with mash potatoe. OK so it was his birthday and he went for the souffle dessert. Ridiculously expensive but fab for a treat and I received 45 euro off for special offer during week. Not for anyone on jobseekers allowance so thank God I got the job. Seriously this is one of my favourites but go there hungry and have that all important fat wallet in tow. See you again soon.

Second time I have been to Shanahans and I promised myself after the last time not to order so much so I skipped the starter and went straight for the main course. Little did I know that the crispy onion string side was as big as a house! Strangely beautiful side, oh so beautiful! Anybody that has had them would understand what Im saying! Steak was unbelievably delicious, beautifully flavoured and the whipped potato is nothing short of magnificent. Very expensive but sure who cares! +++++++++++++++++

I love Shanahans for a treat. Very pricy but once in a while it's special. We went last Saturday night, had a seafood platter between to start but was more than substantial with the crusty bread. Had a steak each which was cooked to perfection, onion rings & mash. A dessert which was ok, didn't finish it but we were probably too stuffed at that stage. Love the Oval bar downstairs for an after dinner drink, big comfie armchairs and a fire. Can't wait for my return visit.

You know when you're planning a trip to Shannahans you need to prepare well - it's an experience you will never forget and thankfully one I have had a couple of times. The service is amazing and a real treat - the freshly baked bread cut and served to you is fab! Of course you need to order a steak - cooked to perfection I must say. Onion strings are a must - rest of the sides I can take or leave not really bothered. Desserts not brillant but I'd rather order half a starter like a half portion and a full blown steak and skip the dessert to be perfectly honest. We were there for a bday celebration once and the waiter overheard us saying it and landed over with a bottle of champers and a plate with a few chocolates decorated etc so seriously amazing - not expected at all but very well received. I love this place and love it as a treat!

Had not been to Shanahans for a while as the last time I was there I was very disappointed with my steak, and I am afraid it was the same this time. Service in this restaurant is second to none on that front you will never be disappointed. It is also my opinion that they serve the best bread in Dublin. There sweetcorn is devine what ever, it is cooked in, it is mouth watering. Pretty much everything was as good as it used to be except for the steak and this is rather disappointing giving it is a steak house. Did I mention the onion ring or is it shoe strings they call them.FAB! To sum it up great experience, fantastic staff, the onion rings, sweetcorn and bread, well what can I say other than do not leave without trying them, if the steak does not attract you back I am sure one or all of the above will.

Had been looking forward to eating in Shanahans for quite a while in order to find out if all the hype was actually justified. Had a very enjoyable evening and thoroughly enjoyed all food put in front of us Warm spinach salad was tasty but the bread worked as a stand alone starter...delicious and very hard to refuse more when offered! Four of us had steak and they were all perfectly cooked and delicious. Onion strings and mash...divine but the other sides of corn and spinach were only okay and not worth the €9.50 price tag. One dessert...oreo cheesecake which was a little disappointing. Overall we had a lovely night in Shanahans but one has to question the value for money element which is decidedly lacking in terms of both the food and wine mark-ups. I am happy that I ate here but wouldn't be rushing back unless it was for a VERY special occasion or if I receive a large inheritance!!

Superb Steak and Cocktails for a special treat. My fiancee and I received some vouchers as presents and used them last Friday. From the moment we entered until the moment we left (and there was no pressure to leave even starting at 6pm) everything went very smoothly. The cosmos were as good as any we've ever had and very generous in measure (they leave you the shaker). The starter we shared was tasty, the bread irresistable (and you must resist it to leave room for the main event!) and the service fantastic. Oh, and the steaks and sides were absolutely perfect together. Best T-bone I've ever had anywhere in the world. At a similar price of a weekend away though, we'll keep this gem for very special ocassions.

We have been here a number of times, and have always rated it expensive, but excellent. So for a special occasion I booked a table for four on December 22nd. Of course, the booking had been made well in advance. Given their reputation is largely based on being the best steakhouse in Ireland, you can imagine my disappointment when having ordered fillet steaks, we were then informed that they had run out! Ordinary restaurants offering a wide range of produce often run out of dishes. But one that specialises in steak meals, has bookings for weeks in advance, and probably knows within a percentage point how many diners will select fillet steaks, has little excuse. We made alternative choices, but the sirloins were not as good, and the sole tasted stale - as though it had been frozen perhaps. I also noted that the service was more brusque than attentive - definitely not friendly. All in all a poor performance for a restaurant I had previously rated as one of the best in Dublin. When you charge the prices, customers expect the best.

Freshly baked bread went down very well. My first disappointment was that there were no more rib-eye steaks available - surprising as it wasn't particularly late or busy. I ordered the striploin instead and my husband, the t-bone. We orchestrated a swap on their arrival as my striploin was dry and my husband has stronger teeth. The t-bone was large and succulent. The many slices of bread in advance were a mistake (misteak!) but our waiter did say while taking our order that many customers brought their unfinished steaks with them so we followed suit. We shared the desert that is a selection of all of the deserts and it was awful. Not good at all and for the price of it!!!! My verdict was at the finish: 'it was only a steak. Good steak, but still, just a steak'. Service was good.

This is not a restaurant you decide to come to lightly. Firstly there is the cost, but secondly the sheer size of the portions demand that you be hungry before you show up here. That said we were helped to chose our meals by a well-clued waiter who suggested to opt for a half-size Caesar salad, which in the end was still a large starter. I started with the scallops which were excellent, and followed by the fillet mignon, cooked to perfection. Desserts looked good but the large portions did not allow me enough stomach space to indulge. I will be back again early in the new year, just before my diet begins!!

Went here for a special night out with a friend and it was gorgeous. We had a cosmopolitan each which was a decent measure and had a nice kick to it. We had a half portion of onion strings, hash brown, creamed corn and 2 steaks none of which we finished. The steaks were like butter; melted in the mouth. The bread was gorgeous and the ritual of bringing it warm to the table and cutting the slices at the table was nice. We didn’t finish the steak as there was too much but the meat was vacuum packed and we took it home. We were supposed to go for a drink afterwards but couldn’t move so went home and chilled on the couch as we ate so much. The service was excellent but not obtrusive.

This is a very expensive restaurant but delicious. My partner took me for my birthday and I was very impressed. It didn't have a pretentious atmosphere that these type of restaurants sometimes do, the staff were welcoming and lovely. The bread is delicious, I shouldn't have eaten a starter as the bread was very filling. I had a salad to start which was fine and then a beautiful fillet steak for main - definitely no room for a pudding. I would go back but it would have to be for a special occassion.

I went to Shanahans on Friday for dinner and was very impressed. The service was impressive and the food was delicious, I had the scallops to start, and the black sole for mains. Both were cooked to perfection and incredibly flavourfull. Most of my table got steaks, and were all very happy. It is very expensive though so I would only go for a very special occasion.

Having decided that we’d like to treat ourselves to a day off work and a day of treats we chose Shanahans Lunch menu to help the cause, and how well did it work out for us? Superb, the food was tantalizingly good, and with service that made you feel super special without making you feel like you didn’t belong! Given their reputation for best steak in Dublin we had to choose it and we weren’t let down. At €45 euro a head their lunch menu left us full to the brim with a taste sensation of treats, all the extra trimmings – wafting hot bread and muffins to munch through and petit fours served with our tea and coffee… super value for money and a top way to start a special weekend. Have also read on their site that they do this lunch on a Sunday!!

Over the years have eaten here many times with family, friends and work colleagues and we have never been let down. It's never fails to impress and service and all the food are really top drawer. Our children adore the place as they treated so well by everybody @ Shanahans. They insist we take them there for their birthdays and even though it can be quite pricey it's truly worth every Euro. After the meal we always adjourn to the Oval Office and sample a glass or two of Middleton whilst reading the historical facts about various occupants of the White House. It may not have the coveted Michelin stars but it always comes up with goods.

Myself and my boyfriend visited Shanahans for a special occasion and it was well worth the money and lived up to our expectations! It is expensive, however they do offer half portions for side orders and starters, so it didn't turn out to be as pricey as we had expected. The waiters were lovely, though some a little bit snooty, but we'd really recommend going. The portions (even the half ones!) are massive, so one side order per person is way more than enough, and one dessert shared is plenty as well! Try the oreo cheesecake - gorgeous!

Went here on Friday night. I had heard great reviews about the food but not such good things about the value for money and the reviews were spot-on. We arrived a little early so we went to the bar for a drink first, which was in a lovely setting. For starters I had the Honey & Pepper Crust Duckling with Seared Foie Gras and that was also georgous. The food in general was amazing expiceally the Fillte steak, which really did melt in your mouth. The sides a huge and really good. The only problem I have with the place was the price, 525 euro for four inc wine, although the steak was worth it the other courses were not. Would go again but would have the be a very special occasion

This place is not good value for money. They charge €50 a steak for no reason other than reputation which as far as I can see is completely unwarranted. Myself and my girlfriend both got the Fillet of beef. We asked for it medium rare but it seemed like it was not cooked the way we asked. The meat itself was chewy and considering this was the fillet should not be. The service is good if you like that sort of thing but I found it a little intrusive to be honest. a waiter was over every couple of minutes to fill my glass which I did find irritating.

Well, my husband took me here for my 30th birthday and my expectations were huge. We'd heard so much about this place, and we are both steak people. My husband, being from South Africa, is a big meat eater. I knew it was going to be expensive, but I put that aside. The food was great, I have to say. But I do think it is ridiculously over-priced and slightly over-rated. The setting is lovely, and I do like the decor etc. But our waiter was very snooty and we felt he was looking down his nose at us. The rest of the staff were lovely, we just got that waiter. The starters were only ok, but main course was excellent. I don't think I'd rush back there, and afterwards, I just kept thinking about how much the meal cost, and how it wasn't really worth it !!!

After many years I finally got around to trying this, and it pretty much lived up to expectations. Firstly the decor and service was fantastic. The starters were pretty good, if small, but the bread that accompanied it was truly amazing. For mains we had the fillet Mignon, which pretty much lived up to its billing that it would melt in your mouth. The side orders were exquisite. For desert we had the platter, which to be honest was a little bland and disappointing, but really we should have just skipped that anyway as the main course was huge. The selection of wines was perfect also. Overall a little expensive for what you get, but somewhere that must be tried at least once.

I think everyone who lives and works in Dublin has heard of this restaurant and knows someone who has eaten there. And there's no point in beating about the bush...this setting, its staff and its food blew every expectation I had out of the water... The single most incredible dining experience of my life. From the second we set foot inside the door, to when we wrapped up in our coats on the steps oppposite The Green, we were treated like royalty. Beginning with a drink and a browse through the menu downstairs in The Oval Office... we were led upstairs to our table. The atmosphere was perfect and the staff were fantastic. Non-intrusive and yet waiting on your every call. The food was beautiful...starters were great but ultimately unnecessary as the main courses are deceptively filling. The filet mignon was out of this world. The sides were very good too. Not something I could do very often(recession time and all), but worth every cent. Oh and make sure you try the fresh bread...you won't regret it!

Saturday night was the first time I have been to Shanahans. Went with my significant other as I had been promising for some time! Such a lauded restaurant, I had some preconceptions that it would be a bit stuffy and formal. However I'm happy to say that its not the case. The staff were very friendly and seemed to be quite expert as any questions about the food and wine list were answered comprehensively. Our starters were very good but the steaks we had were sublime. By far the best either of us have had on these shores. All in all a lovely dining experience. My only niggle was that the lighting is quite dim and I found it hard to read the wine list! I wish continued success to this superb restaurant.

I ate in Shanahans last Saturday night as a birthday treat! We arrived at 10pm and had two drinks in the bar, which is a beautiful setting. At 10.30pm we were greeted by a really pleasant waitress and were brought to our table on the second floor. We started with the trio of salmon, absolutely gorgeous. For mains I tucked into the 24oz T-bone steak, and polished off every morsel. My partner had the ribeye, we has sides of fries (portion way too big), whipped potatoes and buttered spinach. Our waiter recommended a beuatiful Sancerre which accompanied our meal very pleasantly. For the whole night we were treated like gold dust but I suppose why shouldn't any be for the prices that one pays here. For an absolute special treat, go if you can, I will but may need to re mortgage!!!

Very overrated, overpriced and disappointing. I won a voucher for here so thankfully wasn't actually paying. Our waiter didn't seem too pleased when we didn't order starters- kept trying to convince us to even share one! Quite pushy. My boyfriend had the steak- ok but had nicer for half the price elsewhere. I had the halibut which was a mistake- very bland. OK it is renowned for it's steak but I thought for such a prestigious restaurant it would be ok. This place is for the wealthy but not foodies. Also the atmosphere was incredibly stuffy. Very Americanised.

Corporate dining par excelence.... I have been here 3 times in the last month with clients from all parts of europe and they have all been blown away, it was christened it Sha nan ig gans by one of my clients, U have to go here for the steak, onions, creamed corn, mushrooms, it is on a world class standard,The old Gerogian building is fantastic, the green room / bar in the basement with the JFK rockng chair and a pictures and letters from every Amercian president who claimed irish heritage is such a great buzz , I have to say Mr Shanahan it is a true credit to you, dont mind the begrudgers. it is expensive, but you get what you pay for. There is nothing else in dublin like Shanahans

Ooober expensive...... but worth every penny of it. 12 of us visited and not a single complaint. Had the bilini starter which was big enough for a main course. Perfect. "When in Rome...." so the 24oz Rib Eye was ordered for the main course. Cooked perfectly and it tasted exquisite, I did my best but could not finish it. This was accompanied by an ambitious host of onions, mushrooms and potatoes. All of this was washed down with a Burgundy off the extensive wine list. As for dessert; well if you have room you should get it for free. The service was excellent and the sommelier top class. You couldn't do this often but if you know what you in for it shouldn't be a surprise. Definitely in the top five restaurants in Dublin.

Ate here last Monday, Cannot BELIEVE how over priced this place is, very stuffy environment. Staff were standing around in the door way chatting upstairs. No manager came to check on us during our meal which I would have expected paying those prices. Wanted to come here for ages waited till a celebration. bill cost 264 for 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 sides and oh a bottle of very average suave(40). 6.50 for a bottle of water which costs 80cents to buy in. Will absolutely never go back. Food was grand not worth 50 quid for a piece on beef with a drop of gravy and a few bits of onions..Could have had 3 meals in other restaurants with exactly the standard and more of an atmosphere..very disappointing. Full of business men (paying with company cards obviously) My advice don't go unless some other fool is picking up the bill.

In my opinion Shanahans is totally over priced... I ate here last week, we had a drink in the bar before dinner, staff were talking (rather loudly) about what parties they'd be attending....very annoying! Overall, I though the staff didn't really want to be there, our waiter was a bit careless & kept topping up our glasses, even though we hadn't touched them since he last filled them. The steak here is the same as anywhere else in town, it's not amazng & it's not worth the price, side portions are huge, desserts were fine...overall I was dissappointed!! It's a beautiful dinning room, lovely setting.. but does that justify the prices?!?

Very disappointed with Shanahans. Very expensive - almost 200 euro for dinner for two - only had two glasses of wine and no starters. Food just okay - not enough choices on the menu. Feels very Irish American - enormous portions of side dishes. Too many staff fussing around - it made me feel uncomfortable to have so many people approach me. Really wouldn't recommend this restaurant - was here a few years ago and I thought it was much better then.

A little disappointing :-( Went here for the first time last month and I hate to say it but I was a little disappointed. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the steaks were cooked to perfection, but considering the price we were disappointed with the quality and flavour. I did love the atmosphere and the dining areas. It was a real shame that for me, it didn't quiet life up to the great reviews I had read or the price tag.

I would love to give it a 4.5 stars but then there's no option for that. Visited by former US president Clinton, this place is definitely proud of their food. I must say I was impressed. The portions were huge, even the starters. The service was excellent, they even gave us some free homemade bread when we complimented it. Price is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Though this isn't the best steak I ever had, I would like recommend this place to people who hadn't tried it.

Been there today and we came a bit disappointed with this place. We had heard really good opinions about this restaurant and went there with high expectations. The dinner started with some complimentary breads which actually we found to be the best of the whole meal. We shared a set of crab sandwiches as the waiter warned us the starters were quite big and we would not be able to handle the main if we ordered two starters. Anyways, the sandwiches were OK. Tasty but just OK. By the way, they were not so big. For the mains we had the petite fillet and the new york style steak. They were perfectly cooked. But the quality of the meat and the flavour were far from perfect, specially for the price you pay. Being expensive is not a problem if you get something that you can't find elsewhere for twice the price. And I am afraid this was not the case for Shanahans on the Green. We choose the set of different dessert for finishing up the dinner. That was a good choice and definitely recommend it as it gives you a taste of everything available.

Nice restaurant enjoyed the food after waiting two weeks for a table at 6.30pm on a Saturday evening (not by choice/take it or leave it) On arrival the place was empty despite the above, we went to the oval office for a drink and to admire "The JFK CHAIR" but felt very harassed by persistent waitresses after a mouthful of beer to take up our table upstairs despite checking did we have time to have a drink to which we were told "take your time" ye right!!!I understand this is a prestigious place and very busy but whats the point in packing the place with people all night if you don't enjoy it!!The stopwatch was on we were told to vacate our table by 8pm which took away a bit of the comfort.I had the t-bone which was beautiful and plentiful with a side of garlic butter and hash browns and my partner had the fillet Mignon which was given the thumbs up also with a bottle of house red to compliment the steak. The background music is very annoying here like a broken violin getting kicked around the kitchen!!€190 for two people ??? justified?? not really considering many similar restaurants locally same food for an awful lot less!enjoyable evening do, might ring now for another one in 2010!!!!!

What can I say? By reputation one of the best restaurants in Dublin. Food was good- T-bone was all I expected it to be but no more. My wife had the surf and turf which was good too. Starters of garlic prawns and crab cakes were good too. Whats the problem? Well nothing was excellent. The price was quite frankly outrageous. The food was good quality but nothing out of the world- which is less than I expected considering the price. Overall quite underwhelmed. Ironic- the whipped potato side was the highlight.

I have eaten in Shanahan's many times, mostly with work, but subsequently with friends and relatives when we're really looking to treat ourselves. With everyone sharing we must have tried everything on the menu, and even with the most seasoned of foodies amongst us, each meal is "the best XYZ I've ever eaten". I say XYZ because it's not just the steak (which is excellent) but the fish and other meats which are all amazing dishes (although we've never tried the veggie options). Service is the best I've ever experienced and really makes you appreciate how special a nice restaurant can make an occasion feel. I've tried in the past but cannot fault this place on anything (a little pricey perhaps, especially if you hit the wine). Eat early because a 2 hour food coma can often put the brakes on the rest of the night.

I was expecting a lot form Shannahans which is why i may have been slightly dissapointed. I have no prob paying 60 euro for a steak if it is outstanding but my T-bone wasn't even average and the Shallot jus was terrible. The service was excellent if not a little intrusive and the main restaurant was a bit bright and sterile. The oval office would be a far nicer room to dine in. I felt for the money i paid the food wasn't of a high enough standard.

Over priced and the food was mediocre. The service was extremely slow and can get the same at your local grill house. I wouldn't recommend it for a romantic evening either, as it lacks atmosphere.

Ate here with a friend three weeks ago. Both of us had starter's. I had mussels they were good but only good, friend had mushroom soup with a scallop which was divine!! I had Surf and Turf for mains was a little disappointed Steak was amazing and lobster was too but there was too much on the plate a half a lemon, salad leaves and due to me own fault of not asking for the sauce on the side peppered sauce on the steak. Friend had a T-bone steak was lovely. We ordered a portion of mash potato's which was really tasty served uniquely in a copper pot nice touch. We also had mushrooms but wish we ordered the onions as they looked so much nicer. We had a bottle of Sancerre. I had souffle for dessert this was good and friend a cheesecake(cookies&Cream) bit of a let down. We then had two cocktails. Bill was €295 give or take a euro or two. excluding tip! Service was good but what I expected for silver service. Atmosphere and decor was relaxing. Will certainly go back.

Ate here a few months ago to celebrate engagement. Had heard steak was the stuff of legend and wasn't disappointed. When booking was asked if it was special occasion. When I said it was to mark our engagement they congratulated me etc. On arrival we were shown to our table upstairs. Lovely decor. Very old world class etc.Service was friendly but atmosphere a little rigid. Felt that everybody was being quieter than they would usually be because of where they were. Bread was brought out. Freshly baked with cheese and herbs. Delicious. When commented on how nice it was waiter brought out loaf for us to take away. Started with scallops and spinach salad. Both lovely. Scallops cooked perfectly. I had Fillet Mignon, she had pork. Ordered mash and 1/2 portion of onion strings (waiter advised 1/2 would be more than enough). He was spot on as when onions came out the portion was huge. Steak delicious and worked well with sides. Onion strings absolutely divine. Hers was lovely too. One complaint was portions just too big. I was stuffed without eating all food. We passed on dessert as so full. A waiter then brought out two complimentary glasses of champagne and petite fours with word congratulations in chocolate. Nice touch but disastrously spilt glass all over my fiance. Not good. He was most apologetic but as we were going out afterwards it was not ideal. This aside a lovely meal but price is very high and would only be for special occasions. Would be perfect if portions were reduced somewhat along with price.

Best steak in town! Onion rings very good too, service efficient and a nice dining room! Honestly, I think the portions are too big, I once had the Caesar salad and was disappointed simply because it was too large! I wasn't a fan of the desserts either! I only go here for the steak because it simply is that good!! Will I go back?? Most likely yes but not for a while...

After hearing so much about this place - I had to try it out. I knew I had high expectations of this. The first impression was great, professional and friendly staff enclosed in a warmly atmosphere. I ordered the Oyster Rockafella - and this was perfectly done. The cheese was not too over baked and the warm texture of the spinach matched well with the fresh oysters. Other starters included the poached lobster soup which was very overpowering - the lobster was perfectly cooked keeping its elasticity texture and natural flavour. A crab and potato cake which was absolutely gorgeous. And from this it matched the high quality I was expecting. But unfortunately the inevitable occurred. Our main courses consisted of only steak. A fillet Mignon which was a dote and it melted gracefully in the mouth. But that was the only highlight of the main course. I had a rib eye on the bone medium cooked but it was overcooked. The sauce was great tho and it blended well with the meat but the meat was too tough for my liking. I enjoyed it but it really didn't give me the urge to say it was the best steak ever. I even thought it was too char coaled to my liking. But the bottle of Gigonda washed away any left over taste in the mouth. Overall it was a an experience - the starters were perfect and the main could have been alot better. But for a party of 6 and a 700 euro bill you really would expect it to take your breathe away. Concluding this matter, the fillet would be the best option and do try the crab and potato cake , and also ask for the fried onion strips too. Would I come here again? Of course I will, I don't believe one experience of Shanahan's is worth giving it a bad review as I was very welcomed by the staff and by the warmly atmosphere. Maybe I should go for the seafood option next time. But for the price that was paid you would expect something a little bit more special.

The food here is to die for but make sure that you're hungry. The atmosphere is very tranquil without making one feel Library uncomfortable. The service can be slightly over bearing/attentive but generally excellent. The sauteed garlic shrimp is outstanding and the steaks are cooked to perfection. Did not have room for dessert unfortunately. Wholly recommended.

Starters amazing, steaks not all they are cracked up to be. This was my second time at Shanahans and I was very disappointed with the steak, I have had paid less than half price for steak in other restaurants and they have been far superior. There was a sauce all over the steak that was far too strong for it, I’d recommend asking for it on the side. The starters were amazing and I would go back for them alone. I had the prawns that were good and my boyfriend had the foie gras – easily the best either of us had ever tasted. All in all good restaurant but for a steak house they should have better meat. Oh and the sides are amazing ;)

Shanahans is fabulous, been there a few times it's all about meat, but they do make something up for veggies specially. The staff are everything you would expect for 5 stars, but very relaxed and unobtrusive. Yes, it's really expensive but you are paying to have your table nearly ten feet away from the next table - that's priceless.

We visited Shanahans on the Green for a special occasion recently, and I must say I had prejudiced ideas as I'd heard it was very expensive and so I was worried if it would be very lah-di-dah!!! However, my preconceived ideas went out the window very quickly, as we were made to feel so welcome by the reception staff, bar staff and waiting staff. The ambiance was beautiful, and very relaxing. I have never ever eaten a steak as good as the one I got. Every aspect of the meal was incredible. We decided that although you pay a lot... its WORTH EVERY PENNY for the scrumptious food and relaxing atmosphere in beautiful surroundings. We'll certainly go there again!

Having waited for a long time to eat @ Shanahans I was very surprised at several things which happened on the night we visited. Firstly we were told that a 6 week waiting list was the norm for a booking, but that I would be informed if a cancellation happened. I was contacted and we visited. Initially we were led downstairs which had no seats available, we had to stand at the bar for several minutes until a table finally became vacant. The menu was offered and I was surprised at the limited Fish selection from a "Seafood" section, very narrow. The steaks and other items were grossly overpriced as main courses and the starters priced at unrealistic rates. As to the quality of the fare we were all disappointed except for a tower of French fried onions which was the only item of the night which was value for money Basic deserts @ outrageous prices were consumed, very ordinary indeed, followed by GREAT coffee. This was followed by a GREAT bill...... Not value for money at all.

We booked Shanahans for a special occasion. Turned up fifteen minutes early and were greeted by smiling welcoming staff and brought to our table, which was probably the best seat in the house. The atmosphere, staff, food and service were amazing, very unstuffy and easy going for such a fine restaurant. We had a wonderful night and look forward to going back there again – hopefully an excuse will present itself very soon.

Ate here last night and as usual the food was outstanding. Easily the best steak around, beautifully cooked. The bread is one of the highlights but the whipped potatoes, onion rings and Oreo cheesecake are all must-haves! The service is excellent if slightly over-attentive and the price is just about worth it as a rare treat. I'd definitely recommend a visit!

Service was absolutely superb. Had the sauteed garlic shrimp to start and the sole on the bone for mains - to die for. And my boyfriend had the steak - also fantastic. Everything about the place was better than I had expected, was prepared for the hefty bill but it was worth every penny of it.

Quite good if you like steak, but the onion rings are to die for ... We went during the week, and if you don't go mad on the wine list, its reasonable for what you're getting. Be prepared for the hovering/napkin-flicking type of service form the waiters however. 4star, could do with a bit more in the way of atmosphere tho ... Bon Appetit!

We went to Shanahans last Saturday night and all I can say is that it's very very good. The service, food and restaurant itself all show how good quality is worth paying for. To be honest we did find it expensive, but didn't mind in the least as it was well worth it. I just can't wait to go back. Well worth it for a special treat.

Spotted the deal with Menupages and made a 6pm booking. Greeted by very pleasant staff and escorted to the Oval room. Beautiful atmosphere; nice and warm and cosy too. Wine list was massive and good value for what was offered. Food was divine; the Shanahan's bread was to die for. I had garlic shrimp for starters, my partner had crab sandwich and they were both just fab, plenty in the portions too. We both had 8oz steaks which were cooked to perfection with spinach and creamed potatoes which were unforgettable. For dessert, I had Oreo cheesecake which I could not finish because I was so full and my partner had Souffle which was again done to perfection. Staff were very pleasant and we could not fault ANYTHING about this restaurant...a little expensive but worth the treat, you won’t forget it in a hurry....cant wait to go back!

Highly recommended for special occasions! My 2nd visit to Shanahans. Went with a party of 7, all with somewhat different tastes in food. We tried a number of different dishes but mostly steaks for the main and were very impressed. Staff were very friendly, attentive and easy going. The atmosphere was excellent. It was a special occasion, we were approached by our waiter regarding the occasion and were given a complimentary bottle of champagne which really added to the night. A little on the pricey side but worth it for special occasions. The Oval Office is also lovely setting for drinks before/after your meal. An excellent evening was had by all.

Had been really looking forward to visiting Shanahans for some time now - I’m pleased to say it lived up to my expectations and more!! It was just fantastic. I had the fillet and it was so amazing. Was so full after it I couldn’t even finish my wine! Service was excellent. The bread was gorgeous. If I was going back again I would probably skip the bread & the starter!!

Shanahans, the place where Bill Clinton visited when he was in Dublin! It's the most expensive meal I've ever had but then again, given what they offered, I would say it's worth the money. The service is amazing, the waiter even wrap up a new loaf of bread for us when we were asking where they got their bread. Yeah their homemade bread is so good: the best I've ever had. Starters were surprisingly huge, and delicious! My T-bone was good, but I would have to say I prefer the fillet that my girlfriend got: it was such a good job that the whole piece was soft and juicy. I'm really particular when it comes to steaks but I'll have to say: it's worth your money!

Myself and my husband had dinner here for the first time last week. The food and service was amazing. We both ordered steak and it melted in your mouth. The portion sizes are quiet large so there is plenty to go around. The service was excellent and we had a lovely table at the back beside the fire. Definitely a place to go for a very special occasion.

Me and My husband went to Shanahans on a special occasion for a dinner. The food was absolutely tasty. My husband had a steak and it was not possible to finish for the size. I had fish it was great in taste compare to other fishes I had in other places which the taste is from the sauce rather than the fish itself. The service was great too, they booked us a very nice table for our special night and also reserved a table down in their bar for us after the dinner. Well, for the price you pay, I don't think it is a place that you go often, but for a special time, it's worth to pay for the money.

Had Dinner here last week after a long absence from this Steak House. Our Night was ruined from the off .... we arrived and our welcome was at best lukewarm and without any pleasanteries we were told "we would have to sit down stairs for a bit" ..... my guests (who were never in Shanahans previously) were amazed as I was. Our dismay was frighteningly enhanced when we were ushered down to a bar which was full and after some searching by a helpful (but overworked) waitress, 4 stools were found and we were put sitting in a busy spot, that meant 2 of us had to stand everytime someone went by. Within a few minutes we were moved to a table with real chairs which had become available .... other people had left too at this stage and we sat around the table with the half eaten dinners of departed customers around us. The Scene was unbelievable and i can only hope that the Management take corrective action as soon as possible to avoid this happening again. The real Pity for the Restaurant is that when we got to our Table (upstairs) ... the table was empty for about 25 mins and there was no need for us to be ushered to the bar at all. The Food was good ... The Wine was good ... The Bill was expensive (which I expected) but the night was ruined from the off and it was the topic of many of my conversations since. In an expensive restaurant its imperative that the customer feels valued ..... this was not my experience last week ... which surprised me greatly as on all my previou visits Excellent Service was the norm... Bad Service was not left to chance.

A fantastic experience. Went here with my boyfriend who loves steak and was incredibly excited about finally going - it didn't disappoint! The service was excellent, the prawn starter was amazing, the steaks were beautifully tender and perfectly cooked, there were enough onion strings for six people (!), and yes we tried dessert, the cheesecake was huge and absolutely divine. I had expected it to be pricier than it was and will definitely be back I just need another special occassion!

I finally got to dine at Shanahans last Saturday and I am happy to say that the venue did not disappoint. Yes it's a bit pricey but the food and service were truly excellent. The dining room is elegant without being stuffy and the servers were charming, professional and helpful. The steaks were melt in the mouth and the sideorders were delicious. If you are a fan of the humble spud, then the mashed potatoes are a must. I am sure they contained several million calories but I could care less...Shanahans creamy mash were too good to pass up. We had a wonderful evening and will definitely be back.

Disappointing. It tries to imitate the great American steak restaurants and does not quite pull it off. The steaks are good by Irish standards but really not world class. It's time for the chef and proprietor to take a cheap flight to NY and try the real thing.

One of the most memorable meals I ever had. Went for lunch for my sister's thirtieth and we had a wonderful time. Lunch at €45 is not bad value if you go easy on the wine and cocktails. The service was great and, as other reviewers have said, unpretentious. The bar downstairs is lovely also. As a treat worth the expense.

This is the perfect setting for a special occasion.Be warned this place is not cheap but the meal was absolutely impeccable.Be prepared to celeb spot. The one time I went there I managed to spot Colin Farrell and Eamonn Dunphy near my table.I particularly enjoyed the side orders esp. the onion rings. The steak was perfect and the setting was indeed romantic.

After hearing all the hype of Shanahan's had to try it for myself, made a booking for boyfriend’s birthday. Interior fab and staff very attentive. As it was Shanahan's just had to order the steak of which I asked to have cooked very well done when it came out it looked well done but when I got into the middle it was quite pink so disappointed with this. In my view if you’re paying this kind of money you should get what you ask for!! On a better note their breads are to die for and have a great wine list. Overall an overpriced over hyped restaurant. Won’t be in a hurry back sadly.

It's definitely a birthday treat kind of place I look forward to it every year. I've been here a few times and each time I like it more. The service is impecccable and not stuffy or formal, you really just feel like you're being looked after. The steak is melt in the mouth perfection whether your preference is rare or well-done. Onion strings are a must! If you have room try the tarte tatin (for 2). You'll think you've died and gone to heaven.

Yes, it's expensive but worth every penny. Don't go here if you don't like steak or seafood but if you do then this is the place to be. Steaks always cooked to perfection and the rest of the food is always delicious. You definitely have to get the onion rings just to see the plate arrive and the mashed potato is just delicious. But bear in mind the side orders are big so share. Service is top notch here but is never pompous - the staff are genuine and friendly. This is definitely a restaurant I will go back to again.

I had never been to Shanahans before and expected something special. Unfourtunately my dream was shattered. The most disappointing was the rib eye. It was flavouress, was not melt in the mouth tender and had a large water content, it would suggest that the beef is not being hung for long enough. I also ordered a side of tomato salad and the poor tomato had seen to much of the fridge, prepared hours in advance and every ounce of flavour chilled out of it. It seems that Shanahans is living off its name and not its food it serves. The starter and dessert were good but I cannot believe how poor the main course was.

I went to Shanahan's for the first time and it was everything I had expected and more. The food was mouthwateringly good and the staff very friendly and professional. It was an absolute pleasure to eat there.

The food here is pretty unimaginative. I found my steak to be bland; it certainly wasn't the best I've ever eaten. Shanahan's has the most over-priced wine list in the country which is only matched by its over priced a la carte menu. The portion sizes are vulgar and would sustain the denizens of a small village. I doubt that anyone is capable of cleaning their plate. I would prefer the portions to be smaller and less stratospherically priced. The service was perfunctory. This is not a fine dining restaurant.

Fantastic restaurant - best steakhouse in Ireland. The food is excellent, especially the Surf and Turf. The service is white glove without the pomp - very friendly. The last time we went was for our wedding anniversary - we would regard it as a place for a VERY special occasion. The bar downstairs is cosy, the dining rooms are spacious, all with an old world charm. The pricing is very high - is it worth it? Yes, but only once a year. If it was more reasonable, we would probably indulge more often! Our last meal for 2 with cocktails, a bottle of Ferrera, 2 courses each a few drinks in the bar afterwards and the tip was almost €450.

After hearing about how great Shanahans is we finally decided to give it a go! Yes, it is rather expensive, but definitely worth every penny! The service is fantastic & the food brilliant! Admittedly, because of the price, I would probably only go for special occassions (or on work expenses!!) but certainly would not mind forking out the extra few quid for a splendid experience!

I'd been told that Shanahan's is a restaurant you have to go to at least once because it is so amazing. After hearing so many good reviews I had high expectations. Unfortunately I have to come to the conclusion that Shanahan's is not so fantastic as it seems. I took my boyfriend there last night for his birthday. As we were early we went downstairs to the bar for a drink and then were taken to our table. Up to this point I have to say the staff were friendly and attentive. After ordering our meal we were brought over bread. It was cut by the waitress on our table. Unfortunately as the bread was quite crisp, crumbs went flying all over the table and even on to me. Then she walked off and left our table looking like a bomb site. It was the messiest table I'd ever sat at in any restaurant in the world. Thoughout the night this waitress was not at all giving the level the service we received from others. I have to compliment all other staff though. I had the pork as a main and it was absolutely delicious. The side orders are quite large and while we hate to waste food there were a lot of leftovers. The ice cream was delicious and the wine list fantastic.

Best Steak in Town. It's not a place you go to every week !! The food and service are second to none, impresive dining room and the oval office is great for a pre & post dinner drink. Friday lunch is also great and can go on for a long time. The sides are HUGE so only order 1 for 2 people and you'll have more than enough

Excellent. I have only eaten here a handful of times and all for special occassions. The prices are high but everyones knows that before you walk in the door. The Fillet Mingon is to die for. The staff are so polite and professional. We have always received a complimentry glass of bubbly when we mentioned the occassion upon booking. Fabulous time, but wear loose clothing because you wont leave morsel.

For this restaurant I just have to choose my words carefully because really I dont want to understate my experience! Basically I had the time of my life! I adore steak and this was heaven. The prices asked were high but if you didnt know that you shouldnt be there! We all went along for my father's 60th birthday which is a night we'll all never forget because the staff made us so welcome from the door. Firstly we all met together in the downstairs bar and had some superb Austrian beer and the ladies some cocktails. We all had a good gaze at JFK's rocking chair and marvelled at the other portraits at American presidents and other figures on the walls. When the meal came around it was heaven. The wine was exquisite and the waiters were ultra professional and friendly. Please try their fresh bread and the seafood to start. Main course is steak! Best in the country! My eyes fell out when I seen our bill but we went away very happy. It was well worth is. We're planning a return visit. Words can't describe it! The very best.

I was there having the dinner because I am studying Hospitality Business Management and my teacher recommended me this restaurant. I must say that it was the best experience I had in a Ireland's restaurant. The beef was extremely good, exceptionally well cooked and the quality was fabulous, I am totally disagree with the last two opinions and may be my knowledge about the meat seems to them fair but the thing is that all my family are in the restaurant and hotel business and also we supply meat to few of the top restaurants in Spain. The staff was extremely well trained, they know perfectly the carte, the wine list, well manners and with a high culture so you could have a conversation with them about almost every topic. They have all the high standards which are required for a restaurant of its category. And the price is more than justified if you take into account few things, like the salary of that team, the location of the business, the furniture and the fittings, they have their own butchery (that is why they can provide that quality of meat) the environment...I did not go there to be seen because I do not know any person in Dublin and I like to go to that kind of restaurants for few reasons and one of them is because the environment, where you avoid the rude and unmannered people. I do not understand people who criticized here the staff, now I start to understand why in the whole Ireland is so difficult to find a pleasant and well trained staff. An A to the business and I will go back without any dubt

I have eaten in this restaurant twice now, and the food does not justify the prices. Firstly - when I rang to book the table, the receptionist was extremely rude and condescending on the phone - so much so that I considered cancelling. First visit I ordered petit fillet - medium well - which according to the menu should have been slightly pink, no blood. This is what I got - however the meat was quite tough and I couldn't honestly say it was anything spectacular. Second visit I went for a medium fillet mignon - and although it wasn’t as tough as the petit fillet, it was nothing outstanding. I have had far better steaks (albeit generally outside of Ireland) and find it hard to believe that so many people think that this is the "best steak they have ever had". Extortionate prices for a piece of average meat. The fact that they have the gall to charge approx. 50 euro per steak and not actually provide you with anything to go with it is incredible. We had starters x 2, mains x 2, side dish x2, desserts x 2, 1 bottle of wine, 1 bottle of water and it was €241... All in all, average food for ridiculous prices, staff who think too highly of themselves and a lot of people who eat here just to be 'seen'... We won't be going back

The best thing about Shanahans is the service. Food is good if unimaginative. Portion sizes can be vulgar. The last time I ate there, our main courses of rib eye and halibut were enough to feed 6 people. Why not serve normal portions and not overcharge? For the money there are far better dining experiences to be had in Dublin. If I were to sum Shanahans up in one comment I would say that it's fine dining for people who aren't into food.

I could not possibly fault this establsihment. The filet mignon was the best piece of steak that I've ever eaten, it literally melts in your mouth! 5 of us dined here last Friday, on a work night out, and it was just wonderful. The food was absolutely flawless, as was the service. It does come at a price however, but worth every penny!

I have eaten here many times, however (thankfully) I've only had to pay for the meal twice - it's very expensive but worth it. The trick is not to eat all day before you go otherwise you'll struggle to get through two, never mind three, courses. This place is about steaks and seafood. I always go for the tiger prawns to start and a filet mignon with onion (beehive) rings. I've only once ordered a dessert which I couldn't finish. Finally, do not attempt the t-bone unless you have a second stomach!

What a treat, the filet mignon melts in your mouth, the best steak I've ever had. The sides are huge & so tasty (in particular the whipped potato). Chocolate fondant with honeycomb ice cream and mini creme brulee for dessert is just heavenly The service is fantastic, couldnt fault it. Yes its very pricey but worth it for a special occasion especially if you're a steak lover!

I was out for a family dinner on a Friday evening and I was paying for it so I wanted my parents to receive a flawless service. The staff were so helpful and treated us really well. They were happy to recommend which steak to go for and were also very gracious when I couldn't finish it and brought the leftovers home, along with a large amount of crispy strings and a fresh loaf of their amazing cheese and onion loaf.

The scene is set and the bar is raised from the first ten minutes in the restaurant. My only qualifier here is the bread served as an aperitif - anyone having had the pleasure to dine here will know what I am talking about. The quality of food only continues to further impress. The portions are huge - so not for the fainthearted - but you find yourself forcing the extra down because it just tastes so good. We were in a table of 12 - and the restaurant was fairly busy, and the staff still took time to 'banter' and interact whilst timing and presenting the food with perfection. Well worth the high cost and looking forward to going back

Dined here recently for the first time for a friend’s birthday. We were all steak lovers and had heard great things about Shanahans so hoped it was good as we had high expectations! We weren't disappointed. The setting was really lovely, the perfect place to relax over dinner. We declined the offer of a drink at the bar and instead opted to go straight to our table. We decided to skip starters and all ordered steak for mains with a variety of side orders. We were given some delicious homemade bread while waiting on the mains. We ordered a nice (and reasonable) bottle of Sancerre which the waiters topped up regularly without being intrusive. The steak was amazing, tender top quality beef cooked to perfection. The side orders were also to die for, we had ordered onion strings, hash browns, whipped potatoes and creamed spinach, none of which we managed to finish! Even without a starter the food was so filling that only two of our group ordered dessert, huge slabs of cheesecake that looked so good that eventually we all had a taste! All in all we had a brilliant evening, the setting, ambiance, service and food are just so good. Worth the money-you get what you pay for.

I thought I would never eat there because of the price... but we decided to go for the Friday lunch menu at 45 euros just after our wedding...we were 12...I can say this is my best experience in a Dublin restaurant and I'm fussy...the food was amazing... service perfect (not too much just perfect)...they printed out our names on the menu...offered a bottle of champagne at the end… included words of congratulation on the dessert plate. This was unforgettable...still expensive at the end for a Friday lunch but really really worth it..

It was an absolutely fantastic experience. I went there for my birthday. I loved it so much but it’s a pity I can’t afford it that often. Food, I had the largest T-bone, perfect, the sides are gorgeous, mash and spinach I recommend. The service was perfect too and the waiting staff were quite sound also. Value I wasn’t paying but I saw the size of the bill for 5 people, which could feed a small town back in the 80's.

I have been to Shanahan's about 5 or 6 times and never felt disappointed. The portions are huge and the steaks in particular are really good although they should come with something else on the plate considering the ridiculous amount of money you pay for. Starters are a waste of money and side orders are usually good, the onion rings mountains being delicious really. Service is inconsistent: sometimes excellent, sometimes rather cold. The wine list is majestic. I feel Shanahan's is overpriced but not overrated and worth the money on a special occasion.

Service is superb, excellent. The food was nowhere near as good as the surroundings suggest. Huge gigantic portions of mediocre food. Steak was chewy and un seasoned and at nearly 3 times the prices of other places I know ridiculously overpriced (cant remember the exact price - maybe I blocked it out). The creamed corn is outstanding though. Will never be back even if someone else is paying the bill.

Shanahans on the Green has a special place in my heart; I brought my wife there on a special date that was the start of our relationship. I proposed to her there some time later and now we celebrate anniversary’s there. We try to go at least two to three times a year, more if we can. The food is always excellent and we never need look at the menu, its always filet, creamed potatoes, creamed corn (my fav) and chocolate fondant and a cheese board. It’s definitely a rookie mistake to order a starter unless you don't want a dessert. The warm onion bread and muffin at the beginning of your meal will keep you going until your steak is ready. We always arrive early in order to relax in the oval office with a pint of steigle and a glass of wine, the hot nuts are a treat not to be missed. After the meal ask your waiter to reserve you a table back in the oval office to finish off your night with, what is possibly, the best cosmopolitan in Dublin and a gin & tonic. The staff are fantastic, they will be attentive but never intrusive. They always welcome you warmly and nothing is too much for them to organise or get for you. All in all a great experience, not just a meal out. Expensive but definitely worth every cent. Repeat customer for life.

Ate there very recently. Service appalling. Waiter sliced (lovely) bread and left crumbs ALL over table. I had to move to another seat because of air conditioning and he did not bother to clean up the crumbs. We had to refill our wine/water glasses ourselves and ask for drinks more than once. Although petit fours were included they were not presented with coffee. Food excellent (portions small from table d'hote) - service from our waiter dreadful. Would not go there again. It was not over busy so no excuse.

Best steak house in Dublin I took my family here a couple of weeks ago and it was, as ever excellent. I had primed them to forgo the starters, as I can’t believe anyone needs anything more than a steak here so I can’t comment on starters. The steaks were of course, massive, cooked perfectly and served with extras on the side. There were comments about how it is a little off that you have to pay extra for the extras but I really regard this as a little churlish. The wine was superb - we had a few varieties and they were all excellent and the service was exemplary. Of course it is expensive but for a treat it is top notch. I highly recommend it but budget on over 100 euros each!

A special birthday meant a special dinner - Shanahan's was chosen - what a great choice! We both had a trio of salmon on a blini, which was delicious! I followed that with the most perfectly cooked fish I ever had - Halibut - while my partner had medium beef steak, followed that by dessert and coffee - yes it was expensive but if you have a special occasion - go for it!!

Shanahan’s, wonderful in every way - (except the prawns!) Every year myself and a friend visit someplace special to celebrate our respective birthdays. They fall on the same date. This year it was Shanahans turn. Having been there a few times before we decided to take an early evening sitting. My friend had the mussels while I opted for the prawns done in garlic. A selection of different bread was served with the starters - scrumptious! A piping hot loaf was also presented which we devoured. The mussels were wonderful - just done to perfection! My prawns in garlic were a little disappointing. They were a bit on the rubbery side and NOT Dublin Bay prawns (the likes of which you would get in the Unicorn), and more like frozen tiger prawns that you would get in a Chinese or Indian takeout. For those prices, I expected better of Shanahans. Now on to main courses; I had a small 8 oz fillet of steak cooked medium while my friend opted for the rack of lamb cooked rare. Both were cooked to perfection. We cleaned our plates. We ordered a portion of mash potatoes, their trademark "onion tower" along with a portion of sautéed wild mushrooms. All in all, magnificent! We washed it down with a half bottle of house red and loads of water and freshly squeezed limejuice between us. We skipped dessert and just opted for two coffees. Service is extremely attentive, professional, courteous, without being overbearing. The staff just seem to know just when you need a top up in your glass, when you are about to get up (they pull the seat for you and refold your napkin) or if you are not finished and just wish to linger over the last morsel. The decor and setting is lovely and the downstairs bar makes for a nice quite retreat before dinner. All in all a must for that special occasion. The bill was €244 and we tipped 15% - (yes it’s pricey, but you get what you pay for - except the prawns - give those a miss). It is worth the experience – even if you have to save for it.

We ate in Shanahan's about 2 months ago (Apr 07) for the second time and this is definitely cemented as my fav restaurant ever! It is somewhere to go when you want the experience of fine dining without any of the fuss and pomp! The food is understated yet superbly delicious. However - BEWARE - the portions are MASSIVE! HUGE! If you have a starter, it's likely you won't finish your main course, especially after the gorgeous bread or muffins! Would definitely recommend the steak, dauphinose potatoes & deep fried onion strings. Atmosphere is so good; you have to call it the ambiance. The Oval Room Bar is a must so turn up good and early for your meal so you can have a few drinks there whilst you're waiting to be seated. Service is superb, yet again understated. Love the decor, the comfort and the location is great. Bring your credit card - it IS expensive (approx 300 euro for 2 for starter, main course, dessert & wine) but is worth it for the "Experience". LOVE IT.

Went here on a work night out, there was 8 of us and I have to say that everything was fabulous. The waiter was a wonderful guy from Finglas who we all had a laugh and joke with as one of the girls was also from Finglas but a different part to where he hailed from. The food is wonderful and plentiful. The wine list is extensive. I ordered a Dr Loosen German Reisling 2006. Which was wonderful. I was so full afterwards that I didn’t feel proper hungry again for about 3 days. If you get the chance go its it a wonderful gastronomic experience and one I will be doing again as soon as possible with my husband.

Went here a while ago and it was excellent! Would highly recommend the experience to everyone!! I had the Spinach Salad with a Warm Bacon and Onion Dressing to start and the Filet Mignon for the main and both were to die for!! Had no room for dessert although others did and said they were fab. Everything was presented so professionally and the staff are top notch with a very welcoming atmosphere and ambience!! Will be coming back!

Great for a big celebration! We bought my parents here for their 40th wedding anniversary at the end of April. There were 8 of us in the party. We had a really great night, fabulous food; setting/atmosphere and service could not be faulted. We had ordered a cake as the dessert and they even threw in a few bottles of champagne on the house - which I thought was a really nice touch! Will definitely go back again.

I was in Shanahans for a work meal out (paid for by work) All I can day is fantastic. The service was excellent, the steak was cooked to perfection and the staff tended to every need with a constant top up of wine. Try the onion rings. Worth every penny of somebody else’s money, for 10 of us the bill was over €2k.

A while ago I bought my friends Shanahan's vouchers for a wedding present. Imaginatively they returned the favour when I entered the happy state of matrimony. It was some years since I had enjoyed the fare at Shanahans, so I was happy to wait for the 6 weeks or so it took to obtain a weekend reservation. From start to finish Shanahans indulge their guests in a pleasant cosseting experience and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, relishing our tender juicy steaks and reasonably priced bottle of Vacqueyras. I think it has lost some of its gloss over the years and its not just that we have "tested and tasted too much" and are harder to impress. The service was less than perfect with bread arriving after my starter and water being forgotten. It remains a special place however which was emphasised by a couple beside us getting engaged and further reinforced by the exorbitant bill. Best to go with someone else's money.

This place is stunning from the time you walk in greeted by the hostess, who give you a choice of a drink in the bar or straight to the table, to the steaks, onion strings, and creamed corn. This place is has great service but the wine list has dropped a notch, for an American style steak house you would expect more American wines. Expensive but well worth an occasion.

Because I'm worth it!! Fantastic food and service makes this an eating experience worth making the most of- take your time, relax and treat yourself. My advice, skip the starters - order a steak and share some sides (these are huge too) you have to try the onion strings. I went with my boyfriend for a special occasion and we had 2 drinks to start, bottle of good wine, mineral water, 2 steaks, 3 side orders and a desert to share and it was about €180 in total. A lovely evening and experience for 90 euro each. Not that "expensive" in the greater scheme of things when you consider the value for money and not just the cost of the bill.

We went to Shanahan's for a Birthday treat. There were 4 of us and as we'd heard it was quite expensive I was prepared. When we arrived we were offered a drink in the bar or to be shown to our table, we went straight to the table. We were given the complementary breads, which were to die for. The waiter offered us more while we waited as we were not having starters but recommended that we wait, as it would spoil our appetites for the steaks. When the main courses arrived I was stunned by the size of the portions. I think the 4 of us have never been as silent as we were tucking into our steaks, which were cooked to perfection. The birthday boy ordered dessert, which was about a 1/4 of a cake so obviously we all, had to help. It was the most delicious cheesecake I've ever tasted. When the bill arrived I was expecting it to be very expensive but I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. It came in at just under €80 a head including the wine which for the food, service and atmosphere is excellent. Just ordering a main course is plenty there and it's such a lovely setting. It is better than it's made out to be!!!

I loved Shanahans but on a visit last Friday I was really disappointed. We had a dreadful table on the first floor with no atmosphere (there were 3 other large tables that were empty in the room until they filled up at 10) and one of us was squashed into the far wall. The service was generally poor compared to the excellent service enjoyed previously (long waits, little attentiveness etc). We then went to the Oval bar where a LOUD group of drunks were singing in the corner. To be fair the manager did an excellent job in quieting them down and did give a free round of drinks however it was disappointing that the situation was allowed to arise in the first place. As always the food was great (although my steak perhaps a little over done). It was still a nice evening but I just hope that their standards are not falling as it was previously exceptional and worth the 100 euro per head charge.

I went to Shanahans last Saturday as a special birthday treat. I must say it exceeded every expectation. The food was superb and we had a wonderful waiter (I think his name was Denis) who quickly dispelled our first time nervous anxiety and was extremely helpful in choosing the wine. After our truly fab meal (the steak is fantastic) we were shown to the Oval Bar. This you have to see. It had a really cosy atmosphere and wonderful leather armchairs to sink into and relax. The bar was quite busy when we first arrived but the blonde waitress was extremely friendly and very quickly got us seats. She answered all my boyfriends annoying questions with ease and enthusiasm and quickly established it was my birthday. She then presented us with 2 complimentary glasses of champagne and a plate of choc’s. It was a wonderful touch and the perfect ending to a perfect evening. It is the staff's friendliness and attentiveness combined with these personal touches that puts Shanahans far above the competition. Well worth the money!! I shall definitely return!

Wow is all I can say. Both for the price and the food. Have to say it was the best steak I ever had and the sides are huge. The service was great. The bread and corn muffin they bring out at the start of the meal are really nice. Waiters can't do enough for you and are very good in recommending wine and food. The starters are limited so I went without but I don’t know if I would've had room for one any way because I was so full after the main course. We got a desert to share but we barely made a dent in it. I have never seen such a huge slice of cheesecake in my life. Really good meal and nice place to go for a special occasion. Thank God my boyfriend was paying though. At €40-€50 a steak and sides €10 a pop, I would've been broke. Nice wine too, by the glass. Would love to go again but wouldn’t pay that price myself. Would definitely recommend it though for a special night.

Great experience. Fantastic steak and sides truly stuffed after the meal! Starters a tad limited if you don’t like seafood. The bread they bring out to start is a lovely touch. Also it was my partner’s birthday so we received complimentary champagne and birthday plate. Made it all the more special.

The food was excellent for meat eaters however the veg dish was very limited. We have eaten here on three occasions and twice we were seated downstairs as they had over booked. The redhead lady down stairs offers excellent service however the waiters upstairs should be seen and not heard!

A delightful place to wine & dine but wow is it expensive! Went for dinner last weekend with some friends & we were shown down to the bar on arrival...really warm atmosphere & very grand! Had a glass of wine while our table was being prepared...sat down after about half an hours wait...which was long enough but not too bad. If you don’t like seafood you could have a problem with the starters.... the only non-fishy dish was a Caesars salad on the starters menu. We were brought down some delicious bread while we read our menus & asked to pick our wine...etc....our waiter was really lovely & he couldn't do enough for us! I had the crab cakes, which I have to admit I didn't really like.... it’s a matter of taste I guess. There were unusual & I just found them lacking in real flavour..There was too much of everything except crab. That said I did eat them! I also tasted the mussels, which were nice...although a little dry..But again, I'm used to a bucket of sauce with mussels. We all had the steak. It was simply divine. No complaints nothing else to be said. Was delicious. The creamed mash with herbs & butter...I wanted to eat the entire little pot that it came out in. Really gorgeous. The deserts all sounded tempting but I went for the chocolate fondue with ice cream.... it was perfect. You will pay a small fortune for a night out in this amazing restaurant...but it’s a treat that you should have exactly what you want when you do go. Drinks in the bar are just as crazy price wise so be prepared!!!! Enjoy.

I recently went with my family for a big birthday dinner for all of us. Although I have been a few times and sung its praises for so long I have to say I was so disappointed. I think the main reason I am willing to pay the money is the service. But there was about 10 of us and my gosh the service was shockingly bad. Glasses ran dry a lot, food was served up to the wrong people, there was huge long waits between courses even though they wanted the table back. I really feel that, as the service charge was included that the waiters felt they did not have to work for their tip. Also (although I do not agree with it) some of the party did not want steak or an item on the menu and asked for some sort of chicken dish, the waiter completely snubbed them and they were served up, what we all could only assume to be, frozen chicken goujon’s!!! It was my choice of restaurant and a first time in it for everyone else and they were all disappointed.

What can I say, it cost me 250 for a couple but it was the best place I have ever eaten in, came early so had some champers downstairs was great, went upstairs for food and got great seats, table lovely, whole place looks deadly, had to book weeks in advance but the food is brilliant, 50 average for a steak so be prepared, all starters and sides 10-20 euro, but the quality is fantastic, would love to go every week but at them prices only a rare treat…

I absolutely loved this restaurant. The food was out of this world. The service was great too. We both had the steak; it has to be the nicest I have ever eaten. Cooked to perfection and wow are the portions big. Starters were lovely and the bread was to die for. Also had the cheesecake for dessert with Oreo cookie. Yummy. Wine and Champagne were gorgeous. It is definitely worth the money.

I went here with a good friend of mine. The atmosphere was a bit uncomfortable for me when I walked in, do they really need five girls at the desk when you first walk in. I didn’t find the staff that friendly, yes they were there to serve us and serving they were, but I love to have a bit of a conversation with my waiters and one with a bit of a SOH. I was very impressed with my starter, it was very big and very filling but my main arrived about 5 mins after I had finished it. I don’t know about you but I love a decent break between my meals, especially when you are paying that much and want to enjoy every mouthful. I got the small fillet steak for my main (cause I had heard so much about them) and mine was overcooked! I wasn’t expecting that from the "best steakhouse in Dublin". I have to admit, not the nicest steak in Dublin.

Unforgettable dining experience, even if it is crazy expensive. While the food was absolutely gorgeous (definitely the best steak I've ever had), you're paying as much for the beautiful period furnishings, the excellent service, and the ambiance as anything else - it was like something from a Jane Austen novel. Luxe, lush and lovely.

This is a beautiful restaurant and how things should be! We were taken downstairs to the Oval Office to have a drink and look at the menu at our leisure - great start! Then we were brought to our table and had a great bottle of red wine. I had the crab salad (light and tasty) and the baby fillet steak. It was the perfect size for a girl and it cut like butter! Absolutely delicious. The service was impeccable and we left glowing..

The most amazing steak it the world! Never been able to eat 3 courses yet, but I keep going back to try! Desserts are literally heavenly! The only draw back is the price. It's very expensive and the sides really bump up your bill. But I keep going back all the same. The staff are super friendly and not one bit stuffy. The bread they give is to die for, & I always ask for an extra loaf for the road, which they are more then happy to send me home with. A great place for a very special occasion & certainly somewhere that you should try once in your lifetime!

Sooooooo expensive, but soooooooo tasty. Gorgeous steaks and great service. A wonderful place for a treat or celebration. Also loved all the JFK memorabilia in the Oval Office Bar. However don't go unless you are really hungry as the portions are huge and more importantly there is plenty of room on the credit card !!

If you need to impress someone, this is the place to go (unless they're vegetarian). The Volcano oven crisps and blackens the outside of the steaks leaving the cooking to the more conventional grills. This is steak taken to the true New York grill highs. Service is immaculate, side orders are flamboyant (crispy onion strings immediately conjure up images of Marge Simpson's hair, but without the blue tinge) and the flavours honour the finer parts of your palate. Highly recommended (just get someone else to pay).

Shanahans experience ruined by the late sitting 9.30pm, which transpired to be 10.10pm. Main course served at 11.30, way to late to be digesting a steak! As a result no time for dessert! Quite surprised at the number of rowdy drunks in such an upmarket establishment! Overall, disappointing as whole party were looking forward to it and meal was ruined by late start.

Quite simply the finest steaks in Ireland, possibly the world. Knocks Smith & Wollensky's (US-based independent epicurean steakhouses) into a cocked hat. Service was immaculate and near-telepathic. Food was of the highest possible quality. Re-mortgage your villa in the Algarve and enjoy...

If you really want to push the boat out for a special occasion then you really will not be disappointed by Shanahan's. the steak as others have observed is simply to die for perfectly cooked well aged beef .The ambience is understated and not overbearing at all and needless to say when I saw my desert I cried :-) all in all my best meal ever in a Dublin restaurant (mind you I didn’t have to pick up the tab which for 9 people ran to over €1450)

Shanahans is certainly top class in terms of service, ambience and food - however I just cannot justify the prices. Really nice for a very special occasion (unless you are a millionaire and you can afford to go more often!!) but how on earth can you say that a steak is worth ˆ50+, without side orders, no matter how good it is? Granted it is the best steak I've ever had, the onion rings to die for (although object to paying extra for sides when mains are so expensive), the service is impeccable and the atmosphere great but come on.....ˆ500 for 4 people with no dessert?? I hate to sound like an idiot but there was a homeless person outside when we came out to get our taxi and I felt extremely guilty after paying so much for a meal......but I digress! Put it this way, it is "wow" alright, and if you are prepared to pay through the roof, you'll love it and won't be disappointed.

Went to shanahans for my graduation, firstly you are invited to have a drink in the oval office which has all sorts of bric-a-brac from previous us presidents bar has a really nice atmosphere. Dinner itself is quite formal. a lot of the starters are seafood but I had a salad which was really good. You order your main course and have to pay for side orders which I thought was unreasonable. However the steak is quite simply the best I have ever had. At shanahans you pay for what you get and you get an amazing meal and evening

Do believe the hype about this place, it truly is the number one restaurant in Dublin. Well worth every expensive penny! TIP: For a less formal dinner, try dinning in the Oval Office.

Shanahan’s is everything you would expect from a high end restaurant, overly expensive food but made to the highest standard. What really makes this restaurant stand out is its superb service that is as fast, elegant and friendly. The portions of the Petit Beef at first glance look miserable but in retrospect it was actually just enough to leave a bite or two. The staff were quick off the mark when they heard there was a birthday at our table, with a birthday cake and champagne, complements of the house quickly ushered out, but at ˆ450+ for 3 people you really would not expect anything less.
