Went for hotpot at €45 for 3 people. We got plates of thin slices of lamb, beef, squid, clams, rice noodles, prawns, mushrooms, tofu and lettuce. Service was good and quick. A little pricey but was stuffed afterwards. Only thing that bugged me was that like in most places, the English menu is not exactly the same as the Chinese menu (I am of Irish-Chinese descent) but whatever food was available on both menus, the food on the English menu was more expensive! Still though, recommended.

Totally enjoyed the food! Authentic, tasty, and good value! We had several dishes for four of us: soup, fried pancake, seabass, fired nice, and toufu shrimp, yummy! Recommended restaurant. One thing really skeptical is the location, but turned out nothing to do with the food provided by this restaurant. Will go back for sure.

Went back there again recently. I have been there many times, never been disappointed. The food was lovely, I love BBQ and really like the spicy Korean style barbeque. I called my friends to come with me every time, and they all said it was fantastic. And the service was also very good. They always change the BBQ iron pan when it needs to be changed. So I would like to fully recommended. Will be back soon!

Hilan is great for a quick bite to eat or for a meal with a big group. I went here for something quick to eat after work with my friends. We hadn't booked a table but that was not a problem. We were told that we could have the table for an hour, which suited us but which might not suit everybody. The food was fine. It's simple food, nothing special. Despite only having the table for an hour we did not feel rushed by the staff.

Found this restaurant after doing some late night Xmas shopping and was pleasantly surprised. We ordered some dumplings to share which were tasty. Hubby ordered the spicy fish korean dish which was cod and was delicious and definitely had a kick. It was served with a very generous portion of rice. I ordered the Spicy Chicken and Potato Korean soup dish but was told by the waitress about 10 mins later that it wasn't available. Ordered the beef and vegetable in spicy sauce from the korean list again and it wasn't spicy, just a little tangy. Restaurant was very busy for a Monday night but not surprising given their reasonable prices. 1 starter, 2 mains for 28...that's recession proof! Would like to go back to sample their BBQ. Not too much in terms of atmosphere, just a television in the background showing a football match, but wouldn't let that put me off going again!

I've eaten here several times and never been disappointed. Their Spicy Korean Pork and Vegetables is simply delicious. The barbeques are good fun. Service is always friendly and every time we get the bill we wonder if they've left something off as it's such good value by Dublin standards. Just don't come here wearing your best clothes as they will smell of barbequeing for days after!

Had a fantastic meal in Hilan - only marred by the fact that they had no record of my reservation which caused a delay as they moved a table. Not sure whether this is a problem with Hilan or with Menu pages (who I reserved through). When I clarified to the restaurant that I had booked online through Menu pages and had recieved confirmation that the booking was made their reply was that 'we don't use the computer that much'. Despite this they did their best to get us a table as soon as possible, the food was fantastic and the service impeccible.

been here a few times its very good. went with a chinese friend a while ago too and she loved it. they have the bbq thing in the middle of the table but i cant figure it out so i just keep ordering the usual stuff. although i seen 3 chinese there last friday eating from one. man can they put away the food. they were there before and after us. i will ask about it the next time and try it. its very nice. main courses are about 11 euro incl rice. thats very good price. although i think the price of beer has snook up from a thirst quenching 3 euro to a not gonna drink so much 3.90

The lunch menu is limited but very good value. I've been there twice and find the food to be very good. The ma po tofu is really good. They do need to sort out their toilet facitities though as there was no water and had only hand gel and no flushing. Unfortunately we only discovered that at the end of our meal. It did put us off.

Came across this place on menupages during a search for a place that serves hot pot, and decided to give it a go. Turned out that their hot pot is great! Ordered the hot pot for 2 between my friend and I, and though the 2 of us generally have big appetite, we couldn't finish it in the end; it's definitely enough for 3 if the 3rd person is a girl. Unlike most other hot pot places, the seafood was fresh (or at least it does not taste like frozen one), and the portions were very generous (piles of sliced meat). Service has some room for improvement, though it isn't that bad at all. Overall a great place if you're craving for hot pot.

Superb restaurant. We visited one weekday evening, having heard good things, and weren't disappointed. We were mildly intimidated by the menu, which is extensive, with dozens of things I'd never heard of before. So we plumped for a reliable fried dumpling starter, which was the best I've had. My main was breaded, pork-stuffed aubergine slices; gigantic and delicious. My partner went for the duck, which was the best she'd ever tasted. It was also huge. Barley tea was free and tasty. Next time we visit, we're going to be a bit more adventurous, and try more of the pickled, preserved and peculiar options. Service was also very friendly and helpful.

Popped in for a pre-cinema quick dinner and couldn't have been more impressed. The menu is comprehensive and can seem slightly intimidating at first, but the staff are more than happy to explain. Had the Peking duck and pancakes which was some of the nicest duck I have had in Ireland. HUGE portions too! Next time I will definately go for the Korean BBQ as that looked fun! Great service and value for money.

Popped into Hilan after some late night Christmas Shopping. The place was buzzing. For starters, we ordered fried dumplings, which were nice, but a bit small and dry. And Salt & Chili Chicken Wings - which were lovely. For Mains we ordered Salt and Chili Chicken which was very nice, with fresh crunchy veg, and Spicy Chili Pork - both served with Rice. Over all the food was very nice and good value - albeit a little more expensive than the menu listed here. All in, with 2 bottles each of OB Beer (Korean via the US) - the total bill was €50. The service was excellent, but the toilets needed a little more attention! Most of the tables had built in BBQs which I'll definitely be going back to try. All around us diners were tucking in with gusto. Overall a great buzzy restaurant, at a great price.

We dropped into Hi Lan last night for a small bite post post a few pints, but it turns out its not the place to go if you're not ravenously hungry. Portions were huge and so so filling. I started struggling with my choice half way through. I opted for the delicious sushi roll, 11 massive pieces for about €12, served warm with a kimchi filling that really lifted it up. Himself got the chicken (on the bone) with black bean, another large helping but still very tasty and not overpowering which black-bean can often be. I would definitely go back, especially to try out the DIY korean BBQ which looked and smelled amazing. Next time though, i'll bring my appetite.

It was a stormy night and we were scuttling around for a decent meal and stumbled upon Hilan. The display of food from the menu looked intriguing. One tiny notch up from other ethnic shops in Parnell, this korean/chinese restaurant whips up delicious food.I was introducing my mate to hotpot and both of us had plenty of fun trying to cook our food.Between both of us the bill came up to e50 with 3 bottles of Tsing Tao beer.I must say their beer choice are somewhat limited though. Its recession friendly and of the best korean restaurants around!

Went here for a friends birthday. The food was fantastic. I'd have to say the best Chinese, I think I've had. As there were seven of us, between us all, we sampled a wide selection of dishes, and they all received a similar reaction, ie, empty plates. The portions are huge, and you really don't need a starter, but with the prices being so reasonable, it'd be a shame not to. The high point of the night, though would have to be the staff. They were friendly and efficient, and as it was my friends birthday, they gave us 2 fruit plates as dessert and also gave the birthday girl €10 of vouchers. We hadn't told them it was a birthday, but they had clearly been paying attention. It's nice to go to a place where the service is good, the food is fab and the price is reasonable. It makes you realise how ripped off you are the rest of the time!!! The group consensus was, that we'd all be making a return trip.

Have eaten here 3 times now and have always been happy with the meal. I have tried the Hot Pot, the BBQ and on the last occasion just went for the usual starter/main course option. Generous portions, no chance of going home hungry! It's not 'fine dining' but for a nice, relaxed atmosphere, good food (and trying the Hot Pot and BBQ were fun too) and pleasant staff at a decent price it is somewhere that we will be returning to again!

I ate here with a group of friends recently. Having gone to a no of other Chinese restaurants in the area in the past, I have to agree with other reviews in saying it was a nice place to eat. In my opinion, much better than other Chinese in the local vicnity (i.e. parnell st / capel st). The Korean BBQ is a great idea for a group of friends, its very social - and you all chat while cooking your food in a bbq in the middle of your table. The spicy rice dish we had to start was very tasty. The local chinese beer is delicious too.

This is also a Korean restaurant! I have been there several times and have never been disapointed. They have a really good deal for lunch, even during the week end: 10euro the lunch box, Japanese, Korean or Chinese style. But the best is to experience the Korean BBQ with friends. So tasty! We were just surprised to notice that the prices on the Chinese menu were cheaper than on the English one...

Myself and my wife had dinner in Hilan yesterday evening before we went to the cinema. I really enjoyed the place and the food. It has a lovely laid back atmosphere, with nice, friendly, and attentive staff. There was a good mix of Asian and European people there (like most of Dublin these days) which made me feel like I was on holidays somewhere exotic. There is a great choice on the menu, with lots of non standard 'Irish Chinese' dishes - if you know what I mean. The food was beautiful, of a high standard, with good size portions, and very reasonable price. We had two starters, two main courses with rice, and two cokes for 38 quid. I am definetly going back to Hilan to try out the Korean bbq option where you cook the food at the table. Loads of people were doing it and it looks like good fun!

Definatly one of the best Chinese restaurants in Dublin. Ive been there a few times with my girlfriend and we have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves every time. While it is not particularly atmospheric the staff are extremly friendly and helpful. I could not recommend this place enough. It also has a large Aisan clientele which is always a good sign.

I have been kind of put off by Chinese food recently due to mass buckets of MSG and thickeners being used, so I didn’t have high expectations. My friend had eaten in Hilan before and she recommended it. I chose the safe option of a chicken satay, it was absolutely delicious. My friend went for the fish hot pot which looked really wholesome with plenty of fish and dumplings. The portion sizes are excellent, we were really glad that we didn’t choose any starters. Aesthetically, Hilan is not amazing but I would definitely recommend it for a quick bite to eat after work.

Have eaten in Hilan twice recently, and was very impressed on both occasions. Having visited Beijing a number of times, I have been unimpressed with the Irish variety of Chinese restaurants and take-aways, finding them bland, uninspiring and a huge departure from authentic chinese food. So, having read some recommendations, I was eager to give it a try. First visit, had the HotPot (which I enjoyed immensely (but still wasn't up to the standards of my Beijing experiences). The second time I shared two main courses - Cantonese duck, and a soft-fried pork dish (which doesn't appear on the above menu). Both were extremely tasty, and we couldn't decide which was the better dish. Staff are very attentive, decor isn't great (but who really cares?), atmosphere is busy but relaxed and value for money is fab. Will definitely be back. Looking forward to trying the BBQ.

I visited for the first time as I fancied trying out some Korean cuisine. I had flying fish with soya rice and vegetable. I accompanied this with some very strong Korean wine (20%). The service couldn't have been better, very pleasant chatty atmosphere. I wish I had been with a group so I could have tried out some of the BBQ options. I liked the way the food was served in a dish which kept it warm throughout the meal.

A nice place for a quick bite that had been consistently good in my past 5 or so visits. The staff as always very polite. The food arrives promptly. It is good value for money with most starters coming in under a tenner and main courses varying between 10 and 15 or so. All in all a place I will frequent regularly.

been here several times now and well pleased with each visit. has been bustling on each occasion with a mix of asians and irish in the know. normal starters and main course selection including vats of various spicy soups for under a 10 - excellent value -very spicy. tuna is excellent. also had the hotpot which is a novel way of eating and perfect for a group dinner downside is that the usual dishes of meat with sauce -kung po, black bean are pretty standard and very sweet

This was the second occassion I'd eaten here, and again it didn't disappoint. Both times I've only tried the korean food. The korean section on the menu is reasonably small (although the barbeques available would provide a larger selection), but both times I've thoroughly enjoyed what I went for. The spicy kimchi dishes are amazing. The prices are very reasonable, and to be honest a main course each is almost stretching it as portions are very generous. Staff were very courteous and attentive with water, a necessity when eating such spicy food. Highly recommended.

Ate here on Saturday night last. As a keen sushi lover it was difficult not to be tempted but I was so keen to try the Barbecue For Two that I had to! The service was fantastic, our waiter was so friendly and helpful. Everyone was Korean which made the experience even more authentic. We were introduced to a Korean spirit of which we got a bottle - the waiter advised that it was particularly good with barbecued food. The food arrived and the barbecue was lit - loads of fresh squid, prawns, lamb, sweet potatos to barbecue with sides of boiled rice and chips - we were also given some yummy sauces and garlic and chilli to add to the lettuce wraps when we wished. The barbecue was super fun, food fantastic, atmosphere brilliant - all in all came to 60 euro with a tip - worth every single penny!!! Cannot wait to go back!

Had a very interesting Hot Pot where one cooks their own food in a fondu type of vessel. One side was a mild stock while the other was spicy. We were provided with sliced beef and lamb, prawns and tofu. it quite good fun but we felt that the meat was rather tastless (the fact that it was still half frozen didn't inspire). Overall the athmosphere was very good and we enjoyed the experience.

Went there with girlfriend for a quick and cheap dinner. Was more than satisfied and couldn't say a bad word about it. Even got authentic Szeuchan HOT POT. (Very spicy broth that you cook meats/fish/prawns/noddles/veg at your table) Longer it cooks, hotter it gets. Couldn't recommend it enough if you like proper Asian food. Not your local Asian takeaway. So 2 Starters, 1 Hot pot for 2, 2 bottles of wine, all for €75.00. Wine was €20 a bottle. Will be new regular. Hopefully won't get 2 popular and change.

GREAT. My boyfriend and i ate here last night. We were heading to another place just beside, but when we arrived there was nobody in it, as this resturant was full we decided to try it. We had such a brill meal, we ordered the korean BBQ for 2 people , not knowing really anything about it. The waitress could not have been nicer, she should us how to cook it as there is a cooker in the table which they fill with hot coals, and you cook yourself. We just had what they had on set menu but you can try other meats and veg. Do'nt have the potatoe as it takes to long to cook. We also had 2 beers with our meal and found the bill a nice surprise. Do'nt tell everone but either go as 2 or bring some friends it's not only yummy food but its great fun !!!! We will be going back very soon with friends.

On a Monday evening at 7pm this was the only one of the many Chinese and Korean places on Capel Street that had anyone eating in it so we took that as a good sign. The food however was really nothing special, very much take away style food (other than bbq which we didnt have time for) at sit down prices. The Chow Mein was fairly bland and the Kong Po Chicken made with a half bottle of sweet chilli sauce and not much else. I wont be in any rush back as there are plenty of other places to try in that neigbourhood - maybe this place was only busy because it looks relatively new.

Capel street is awash with chinese and korean restaurants. If you want a place with atmosphere there are plenty to choose from. However if you want good food at reasonable prices then you go to Hilan. It certainly lacks finesse but it makes up for this with friendly enthusiastic staff and BIG portions of very tastey food. The beef blackbean and pork sweet bean dishes are mouth watering.

This place is probably not for a romantic first date but it is a clean and bight room, with Koreans chomping down the oriental dishes which can only be a good sign. The option of cooking your own barbeque is good for a group or just for the novelty of it, but can be annoying if you are starving and have to wait for the food to cook. The a la carte options seem to be the best for the real asian style of cooking and dishes that make this place feel authentic and good quality. Looking forward to visiting again when the craving requires.

This is a very nice little spot for some good asian food. They have a good variety of dishes and the waiting staff are extremely polite and attentive. It lacks a little in atmosphere but makes up for it in the food, in terms of both quality and quantity - good sized meals but not so much that you couldn't get through it. I would visit Hilan again.

The problem with asian restaurants in Ireland is that they cater to Irish palate. Inevitably this means they all serve the same thing - tasteless meat in *horrible* slop sauce. This was the case with Hilan's express lunch menu - but their full menu was a completely different story. I enjoyed spicy razorshell clams with sping onion and ginger - the best asian I have had in Ireland bar none. The fact that there were actual Korean's eating real Korean dishes is also a good sign. So if you go, don't order anything where you can mix and match meat and sauces. Ask the waitperson what they'd eat, or ask what other patron's are enjoying and have yourself a real treat.

I like this place, I have had the Korean bbq as well as food off the a la carte menu and enjoyed it all. The bbq is a great experience but it does take a while! it isn't fancy but neither are the prices

Dunno about this place, my beef with ginger and scallions was bland as bland can be. Much more like beef in a chicken stock jelly with an entire bag of onions. The beef itself was also of dodgy, chewy, slightly gristle-y quality. It was cheap and my friends did enjoy their food so I'll give it another try before writing it off altogether but I can't say I enjoyed eating there.

A glorified Chinese takeaway... a good glorified takeaway at that it must be said. Food is great. Seating slightly strange especially with the BBQ dishes hitting off your knees but a nice place to be and have some tasty grub. It's all about value for money with Hilan. The value is very good but don't be taken in by the BBQ 'self service'. If you wanted to cook your own food then I'd advise you to stay at home and do it there! Great for the novelty factor. Beer is good. Staff are friendly. A cheap, friendly night out.

We ate lunch at the Hilan recently for the grand total of €8.95 per head. This included a starter/soup and a main course. Both our soups were delicious (hot & sour and mushroom & chicken). However the main courses were of the average chinese variety. The portions were generous though and represented great value. An adjoining table was having a Korean BBQ which smelled delicious. I think that I'll go back again to give the BBQ one go before making up my mind for certain on the Hilan.

Hilan was not as 'delicious' as I was led to believe. The spring rolls and spare ribs starters smacked of the frozen variety. I've produced the same from a freezer at home. The special sea bass was very tasty but the sauce on top included minced pork!! This ruins a good fish dish. The beef with ginger stir-fry was so ordinary. Was disappointed with Hilan as a Chinese person recommended this restaurant to me as one of the best in Dublin. It doesn't say much about Chinese cuisine here!

I love Hilan and the Chefs special tofu is amazing! It comes on a sizzling plate with a huge silver tinfoil flowerlike casing. The sauce is tasty and just the right balance between spicy and sweet and the tofu actually tastes of something, which if you're familiar with tofu, is quite an achievment. Myself and my boyfriend frequent Hilan fairly regularly but recently we dragged another meat eater so that my boyfriend could sample their Korean BBQ. My fellow diners adored their BBQing experience and although I didn't partake, I really enjoyed the lengthy eating experience. The staff and service has been good on all of my trips here. However, the food does tend to be served as it is produced by the kitchen which can sometimes leave one diner waiting while the others politely hold off on tucking into their own dinner. And the beer is just soooo cheap!

Great value food although restaurant itself is quite basic and the last time we ate here my partner’s food was brought out 20 minutes after mine.

We first went to Hilan in December 2006 (when out Christmas shopping & could not find a table anywhere in city centre). We were attracted by the food displayed in the window and decided to walk in. As the place was packed with Asian nationals we had a hunch that the food would be as close too authentic as possible (Hilan is a Chinese and Korean restaurant by the way). Long story short, although living in Clontarf (and having access to two highly rated Asian cuisine restaurants. Hilan became our favourite restaurant, and we became “usuals”, being greeted with smiles and cheeky jokes. But trying to remain objective, although the food is great, the service is poor and the facilities… well less than desirable. If you like good food, don’t fuss about poor customer service (or more exactly, oscillating customer service, as they are friendly but without being consistent) and don’t mind holding “it” then Hilan is a great choice. We actually went back last weekend (August 2007) and we noticed a slight price increase. I’m not sure if it’s justified, but definitely still worth it.

Great restaurant.... A group of us went there for dinner recently...We all had the barbecues & had great fun cooking our dinner... Good selection of beers and wines and our bill came to just over 40.00 each, which was excellent value as the portions were more than generous..

Last week myself and husband had a fantastic meal in the newly opened Chinese restaurant Hilan, for an unbelievable 50 Euro! Starters of BBQ ribs and seafood pancake were delicious. Mains for husband of beef in black bean sauce was to die for and duck Cantonese for me was stunning. Both dishes were served with boiled rice. We had a bottle of Merlot for 20Euro. Without wine this meal would have only cost 30 Euro! We will certainly return to this restaurant for the brilliant service and excellent value for money. On a slightly negative note, Hilan does not have a full bar licence and only accept cash, but it still does not take away from the fab night out we had there.
