The only restaurant that wasn't busy on a Saturday night, should have raised alarm bells. Very small, homely place but with no atmosphere. Disappointing really. To be fair the service was good enough but the food was nothing special, my steak was tasteless!! 2 starters, 2 mains and a bottle of wine €100.00. Would have cooked a nicer meal myself. Luckily I had great company

Small restaurant on Main Street. And another where almost all the customers were American. And another where their claim to be part of the “gourmet capital” just doesn’t live up to the advertising. A starter of Boxty was a perfectly fine “bubble and squeak” but came with a Mediterranean style salad and red onion marmalade. Neither of these made sense and the dish simply didn’t work a starter. A very underwhelming second starter of chicken livers brought an OK salad and a tiny portion of small pieces of liver scattered over it. A main course smoked salmon platter brought a healthy portion of salmon, capers and lemon. It also brought an incongruous portion of tartare sauce which just doesn’t work with smoked salmon. The other main was described as a port and porter beef casserole. There was no discernable taste of either booze. Nor was there was any sign of the long slow cooking that you expect from a casserole. So, dinner was some bits of meat and veg in a thin, pale gravy. A bland and boring dish. But it did come with good colcannon. A fruit crumble dessert with ice cream was OK. It was probably frozen mixed red fruit (the sort you get from Lidl or Aldi) cooked with apple. It’s the sort of dessert you often cook at home but never see on a menu. More places should attempt to do traditional puddings. So credit to them for trying The bill came to €78 which included for two glasses of the house white – the first of which wasn’t sufficiently chilled.
