Tried Jim Edwards for dinner when we visited on a golf vacation. The restaurant appeared to be understaffed. While we were seated promptly, we didn't see anyone to order a drink for 20 minutes. Once they realized we were there, we had no problem, however. The food was fresh, prepared well and was simply delicious. There were other restaurants in town that we want to visit when we return, but this is a good, solid choice that won't disappoint.

Visited Jim Edwards recently for a quick bite to eat in the bar. Couldn't resist trying a cup of seafood chowder to start, which is a fantastic idea, as a bowl is sometimes too rich before a main. It was lovely and creamy with a tomatoe base, plenty of white fish to be found in it and also a few mussels plus a slice of garlic bread, great choice for €4.95. My friend went with a bowl of potoatoe and tarragon soup and plenty of fresh brown bread was supplied with this. I'd a stead sandwich here, served with mushrooms, onions, chips and side salad plus a chilli mayonnaise on the side, nice to get something different! For €12.90, this steak sandwich is excellent value, a fine piece of steak was served too and cooked just to your liking. My friend choose the lamb cutlets on a bed of mash with an onion gravy reduction, he got 3 very generous lamb chops on a silky smooth bed of mash and a portion of veg including some gratintated potoatoes also followed. This bar menu offers excellent value for money and never fails with it's food. It has a large choice of shellfish and fresh fish to also choose from, for which we will indeed return! Service was efficient and prompt and the bar was very busy in general.

Went to Jim Edwards recently for the 'Dine in Cork' week offer. We were a party of 8 and we were at the top of the restaurant watching it all going on. The restaurant was very busy which created a lovely atmosphere. The service was incredible. We were waited on hand and foot. Even though the restaurant was packed we were seated straight away, our order was taken promptly and we were not waiting long for our food to arrive. We had plently of everything and were looked after incredibly well. The food was great (not one complaint out of the 8 of us)! Would definitely recommend Jim Edwards if dining out in Kinsale - you can't go wrong!!

I'm beginning to feel like Michael Winner writing these reviews and whilst he has Geraldine I have Freda. Jim Edwards is a restaurant that we would visit quite often when in Kinsale and the main reason that we go there is the consistantly good food. I have never come out of jim Edwards wanting more, which is more than I can say for other restaurants that we have visited. We were in Kinsale and called in for late lunch/early dinner at about 3.00pm.We had small boy in tow so he had to eat too. Firstly let me say that the staff were attentive, pleasant & always polite. More restauranters should take note of this as I have had many a good meal spoilt by stroppy staff. Freda ordered the burger and I ordered the pan fried plaice from the specials. Small boy had a baby bowl which he enjoyed. Freda said the burger was the best she had in a long time and my plaice was excellent too. We had banoffie for desert which could have been slightly better but enjoyable none the less. I had a glass of sauvignon blanc with the fish and it too was delicious. The sign outside the restaurant says established in 1971 and I remember as a child, my folks going there for meals in the 70's and I'm sure that their dining experience would echo my own. So all in all top class and if you're in Kinsale give it a whirl!

We had lunch here on a Monday afternoon and I can honestly say it was probably the worst food I've ever gotten in a bar. Absolutely shocking. We ordered the spicy chicken wings and a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel. It took 45 minutes for them to deliver to us the most disappointing meal of our holiday. Burnt bland wings with the tips still on and a little pot of gravy(?) and some brown bread to accompany them. My bagel was stale and also charred. I scraped off the smoked salmon and cream cheese and just ate those. Would never go back.

The restaurant was packed and we got the last seats in the bar. I got baked cod mornay and my husband got seafood au gratin. Both delicious. Served with fresh, perfectly cooked brocolli and carrots. We were both well full for €34. Service and atmosphere was great. Recommended it to everyone we spoke to on holidays. Cant wait to come back.

We decided to take a day trip to kinsale for lunch and we asked around and some of the locals recommended Jim Edwards. We decided to try the restaurant, there was a set menu for 25 euro which we thought was a bit pricey for lunch and the kids menu was 6.50 which was good value. We decided to go for the set menu in the end and we were not dissapointed. The food was really good perfect sized portions. The staff were really friendly. Would definatly go there again.

We came into Kinsale and asked our B&B hosts where was a good place to go eat ... Jim Edwards was his immediate response. The restaurant was packed when we got there, and we were lucky to get seated. Being on a little 'weekend' away, we decided to spring for a bottle of wine .. and altho. I dont remember the name of the wine itself (shame ...), it had great flavour and it wasn't too expensively priced either.. so the wine menu might be a good thing to glance at. The food itself was good. I had a steak and he had fish .. and our meal came with a side of vegetables. Nothing to complain about, the food came out hot and the steak was cooked perfectly. There is a different menu for the bar, and the bar has a seating area for eating ... but we didnt realize taht until we went into the bar after dinner. So it might be worthwhile to check out both menus beforehand.

I have eaten here on a number of occasions and continue to return. Overall the selection food is very good. The chicken chasseur is serviced with a large portion of vegetables and potato gratin. The Chicken always tastes succulent. Friends had beer battered fish and chip and tartar sauce a very large portion. I sampled the fish and it was light and flaky and the batter was also light tasting. Sadly the interior is very dated and if you do not get a seat in the booth it can be uncomfortable at the other little tables. The restaurant beside the bar has much of the same menu and better seating and interior. Overall good value for money.

Its not a bad place to eat! The food is nice and the staff are nice. However it does have its faults. For the price of the food I feel that it definitely needs an overhaul. The owners dont seem to have done anything with the inside in years and while some people might find that 'charming' I dont... it is definitely very dated inside. I think I would have a better review of the place if it wasnt so over rated. There are far better restaurants in Kinsale but this one seems to be talked about the most. I think in this climate they should be offering better deals like the other restaurants are. Last time I went I didnt have a booking so we ate in the bar. It was uncomfortable to say the least as all of the booths were gone and we were just sitting on stools... that is definitely not worth the money that was paid for the food. And while the bar menu is cheaper than the main restaurant menu it is still much more expensive than its competitors and not worth the back ache. However I wont fault the food or the staff.

Visited Jim Edwards with the War Office. We both plummed for chowder, being the choweder-holics that we are. Strangely enough, although not entirely unpleasantly, it came with garlic bread. Why would you put garlic bread with chowder? It already came with some very acceptable homemade brown bread (Not a couple of slices of packet stuff). More importantly, the chowder was pretty decent and had a nice aroma and bisque-esque colour and taste. Bad news, the little bowl of it cost over €7 each. Totally unacceptable in this environment. Knock off the garlic bread and get back to basics! Service was friendly. We couldn't fault it. The decor is a little tired....stained photos of Kinsale, etc. A little effort would bring Jims up in the World.

Overhaul required here...... Please change the menu here, the bar food menu hasn't changed in years, each time I go back there (i'm not a regular) the menu is the same, always the same! In any case I found recently there is a definite atmosphere of panic in the bar, primarily driven by the staff who are frantic trying to get dinners on tables, while doing their utmost to avoid the punters at the bar who are busy eyeing up the progress you are making through your meal so they can finally take you place!!! The food is variable, steak is nice, curry is from a packet, its all about the choices you make!

Had been looking forward to eating in Jim Edwards for a long time but the problem with Kinsale is so many restaurants so little time.... Anyway decided on a light lunch in the bar. It was really busy but got a table for 2 straight away I had crab claws which were delicious. my husband had seafood chowder which was a bit of a let down, the flavour was good but he didn't come accross any shell fish and other fish was a bit scarce. It wouldn't put me off going back but I would choose more carefully.

Ate here and was really disappointed. Kinsale has a reputation as gourmet capital of Ireland and I used to love coming here to Jim Edwards for Sunday lunch. We chose on this occasion to eat in the bar. What a shame. I had paté for starter which was fine. It was homemade and tasted ok. The mains really let them down. My salmon "fillet", which in fact was a salmon cut;et, was overcooked and didnt taste very pleasant. My partner had haddock and chips was ok but slightly overdone. Our friend had a Chicken Curry, which was most certainly not home made. It tasted and looked like it came from a packet. Disgraceful at 12 euro a pop. Serious improvements needed here. The staff are very innefficient, probably from poor training. The food needs to be totally overhauled. The menu hasnt changed since the nineties.

I eat here a couple of times a year and its one of my favorites. Either eating at the bar or in the restaurant you get amazing consistency and really fresh tasty food. My favorite dish is the blue cheese crusted crab which is flaky and melts in the mouth. The potatoes au gratin are the best in Ireland and just as good as my wifes. The veg is steamed and gives you a really good feel factor. It gets busy there so book for weekends in advance. My wife was not too happy with the scallops and felt they were not hot enough. Other than that this is a place we would visit again in a heartbeat.

Jim Edwards is always the birthday place of choice! The pub side has great atmosphere so we always return to there. Food is always great... fish and chips are superb! The staff is wonderful and always have a vegetarian offering if asked. Although it is pricey it is great and worth it! Highly recommended and will return!!

the seafood chowder was a disaster and it looked and taste like it was made for tinned tuna and sardines. There was no variety of fish in it and the colour was an unpleasent tanin brown.

I have eaten in both the bar and the restaurant - both are fantastic but I prefer the bar for it's atmosphere and large tank of lobster! Seriously delicious hearty meals and quick service even though the place is always packed.

On an impossibly wet afternoon in Kinsale I took a quick decisions and dashed to Jim Edward for shelter and respite from the rain. I quickly warmed to the half lobster starter and baked fish pie. Both were excellent and made for a very generous lunch. Service was professional and attentive, even if the pub-like atmosphere wasn’t that comfortable. It wasn’t cheap, but the food and service were good.

My 18 friends and I went last Saturday night on a reunion night out. We took the Christmas Dinner menu. I'm always a bit weary of these menus, my experience being 'there rough and ready and thrown at you' but NOT the case in Jim Edwards. I had the seafood chowder, delicious. Others had stuffed mussels, while a bit dry were still good. Everyone was very satisfied with their main courses, I had the monkfish, which I thought was one of the best I have ever had, especially the sauce. My warm raspberries and ice cream were really good. Again all of the group were delighted with their respective desserts. Tea and Coffee included too. We also had a number of house red and whites while others had beer and some even had water(!), our total bill was €55 per head including tip. Fantastic value for 1st class food. Service was very friendly and efficient given the place was packed. We all agreed we'll be back. Well done to Jim Edward's staff.

I ate here last Sat night with my husband, just a quiet romantic meal for two. I have eaten here before and again, I wasn't disappointed. My pate starter was lovely, my lamb cooked to perfection, we didn't have dessert but partook in a nice merlot, all for €104 including service charge which was our own choice. Service as usual was great nerver ignored but not in your face. Love Jim edwards for that special dinner night out.

A pub with bar food through one door, a restaurant through the other door. The restaurant has pleasant dark wood walls, low lighting and tables too close to one another – very fashionable 25 years ago. Good quality brown bread and butter was already on the table to nibble at while we looked at the menus. One starter of vegetable soup was obviously homemade. It had a good overall flavour but having been blitzed this was a general savouriness rather than any particular vegetable dominating. Another starter brought a sauté of lambs kidneys and mushrooms, which sat on two croutes of bread. The Madeira and garlic sauce was disappointingly bland, adding moistness but little else. The restaurant prides itself on its steaks, so that was what we ordered. A perfectly fine fillet and a slightly overcooked sirloin both had good taste. They came with separate dishes of chips and dauphinoise potato and one of mixed veg (carrot, red cabbage and broccoli). Too full for dessert, we finished with very average coffee. The food plus a half bottle of something red came to € 85, which is not cheap food for what it was. Service had been friendly and efficient.

Was here for dinner on Saturday night. Atmosphere is quite good, but the service wasn't great - we waited approx. 15mins after being seated before anyone came near our table to see if we wanted any drinks etc. We ordered dinner & drinks at the same time - I had smoked salmon cornets & prawns - have to say that it was fab. One of the other girls got the brie - and was disappointed - it was like they threw a couple of slices of pepper onto her plate as a side salad and forgot to finish it off, 1 quite small piece of brie, another girl got the mushrooms and was also disappointed, she expected large mushrooms and was surprised to receive regular small mushrooms that were chopped in half on her plate. They started clearing the starter plates before everyone at the table had finished. Main courses arrived shortly after. I had the cod with blue cheese crust - it wasn't a great choice, the 'crust' was breadcrumbs dumped on top of a good sized piece of cod and the blue cheese was melted around the fish. The cod was quite dry and I barely ate half of it. Another one of the girls got the king prawns - she said it was lovely but quite small for the money - 28 euro. Another got the steak which was huge & she said it was very tasty, another the monkfish which she said was just ok. Dinner was finished off with coffee and 2 desserts shared between 5, we'd 2 bottles of red wine, 1 bottle of white. We had to buy bottled water because the jug of tap water we asked for had a very strong chlorine taste. Also be aware that the prices displayed here are not correct - this website says that cod is 18.95 - its actually 21.95. We had 5 starters, 5 mains, 3 bottles of wine, 2 bottles of water, some coffee, 2 desserts and a round of drinks and it worked out at 70 per person - it was pretty steep for what we got to be honest - I've no problem paying for good food and despite the good start with the salmon and prawns - the rest of the dinner was a let down. I think if I was to go back I'd eat lunch in the bar rather than pay the

I went here on my first trip to Kinsale and will definitely be returning on my next trip in July. I had the crab claws in garlic butter. I have to say it was without a doubt the best lunch of my trip. The meal was inexpensive given the quality and size of the portions. I can't wait to return.

First Class, I eat here very regularly and can honestly say you will not get a bad meal. Two great menus bar and restaurant and the atmosphere is great. In my opinion the best place for food in Cork.
