Me and the little lady visited The Riverside while on vacation in Southern Ireland recently. We found this little gem by chance one evening and decided to dine here. We were not disappointed. As we did not have reservations and it looked very busy, the gentleman asked us to take a seat in the bar while he prepared a table. We entered the bar and it was like a scene from "Cheers". The barman was the spit of Sam, jeez, the guy must be 7 feet tall and he was joking and laughing with these 4 guys at the bar having beers. One guy called Tommy was telling a story about pressure testing which must be some kinda local joke cos they were all laughing. I met John who I think came from Birmingham and he strongly recommended I try the steak. John, you are my new buddy because the steak was as good as a porterhouse from my local Frankie and Johnnie's back in Hoboken. And I always thought the New Jersey steaks would not be equalled. Myrna decided to have the fillet of salmon which must have come from the nearby brook because it was fresh, real fresh. Myrna said she decided to have the fish because of the panoramic views we had at our table overlooking the nearby brook. It was awesome, thank you Chef!! We returned to the bar after sampling some delicious desserts and had another beer. We listened to the locals as they joked with each other, I know our local post master would not be as humerus as the guy they have here, he gave as good as he got from the barman. Overall, I hope that Myrna and I get back to The Riverside real soon.

I regularily visit The Riverside Restaurant and generally find the food very good. The downside is that the dining area is just one very big room and unless it is very busy it is lacking atmosphere, maybe they should consider creating some nooks and corners by adding some partitions, plants etc to break up such a big area. It is also quite expensive for Kanturk but then again there aren't many restaurants to chose from in the town so I suppose the market determines what they can charge. Overall I like the Riverside and it is definately worth a visit, they also do bar food which I have had once or twice and was quite good but I prefer the whole "eating out" experience of the restaurant.
