I wrote a bad review on the Bosun last year, and I'm happy to say I can retract that review as i've been here a few times since and each time has been a pleasure. The staff are very friendly and attentive, even the young staff who havn't been there long. The food is excellent, definetely won't come out hungry but worth leaving room for dessert. Back to being a favourite again - looking forward to many more visits.

Went here for an Evening meal with my father on Wednesday. Have been here a few times before, and the standard has always been the same. Good Food, Nice Location and Great atmosphere! Was here last year for my brothers birthday meal and a few drinks in August and thoroughly enjoyed it then and now. We've been here before this too, but dont know when off hand as its been a good few times. The only complaint that I would have with this restaurant is the staff are not really friendly, its not like they are willing to do anything you ask , however service is fast and efficient, which I suppose we cant ask for much more than that. Decor is nice, traditional pub / restaurant with a marine theme. Food is great, well presented prepared and tasty.. No complaints. - Patrick

“For over a hundred years, we have provided sustenance to the traveller.” There are some terrific food traditions in Cork and Monkstown’s The Bosun is one of them. I “travelled” down there this week and can report that the team, who won the Irish Pub of the Year in 2002, are still serving up top class food, as many of you know. It is a lovely harbourside destination and there were a few eating out of doors there at lunchtime. Food is fine and portions large and the service is excellent. Started off with very acceptable seafood chowder and, since I was by the water, carried on with a Baked Hake with Mushroom. The house chowder was excellent but the Hake was beyond that, the sauce superb. It came with baked potato, a side dish of veg cooked to perfection and another dish of lovely chunky chips. Wine by the way was from their newly installed list which features many from the huge James Nicholson Wine range. AA Badenhorst, one of their South African suppliers, is larger than life with a superb talent for producing wines of character and all it took was a glassful of the Swartland Chenin Blanc to bear that out. There are wines from all over the world, including six fine wines available by the glass from a special system on the bar counter. Finished off with a fine cup of coffee. Just had to give myself a half day after that!

Went here for lunch one Sunday, arrived at 3.30 - place was v busy, tables are squashed in beside each other, so no comfort at all ! Food was very expensive, could not believe the prices - was ridiculous. Food was only ok, when it arrived, I could tell it had been reheated in a microwave, so bit rubbery. will not be back.

Went there in November for a family meal. When booking (in advance) asked to be seated in the Restaurant. When we arrived we were put in a room upstairs which was quite basic with a freezing cold stairway to negotiate on the way. I didn't appreciate not being told about that we were to be banished to the 'attic' when I booked. The owner/manager was in the restaurant that night and he never came near us just to say hello and thank us for our business. The restaurant was not busy on the night and he certainly could have made an effort. I approached him myself in a friendly manner and introduced myself. He didn't care one way or the other really. I find this strange behaviour from someone in the hospitality business. The menu was extensive and some of the dishes were good but some were awful. Personally, I enjoyed my meal but most of the others in the party didn't. One of us who asked for his beef to be rare got it well and truly well well done. Stupid. The worst aspect of this night out was the rudeness of the serving staff. We are a well behaved non rowdy quiet group and only few of us were drinking alcohol on the night. The most that any of us had were two or three small glasses of wine. There was no need for rudeness, we were not rude to them. We were in the restaurant at 6pm and gone by 8:30pm, hardly a group of hardened party animals. There were three servers involved, one of them was an irish girl with short blonde hair who was nice, but her two non irish colleagues were horrible people. Rude and cold and unwelcoming. If they are not happy working in the hospitality industry then they should leave it. Their attitude really made for a cold, hostile and most uncomfortable experience. I left a tip because the irish girl was very nice and there was barman downstairs who was also pleasant. Thin, dark hair and glasses. However I'm kind of sorry now that I did. I was disgusted that the owner didn't even call up to the "attic" to see us and for that alone I will never set

We returned here last saturday and again as always had a fabulous night. there were 4 of us we had a drink in bar on arrival, where we were given our menu's. orders taken then we were brought to or table. I have to say every part of each meal was lovely.for starters two had chowder one had mussles I had chicken vol au vent. All went down very well. For mains two had steaks , which were cooked perfectly, one had plaice with a crab stuffing. I had trout. Each came with portion of veg and we were serves chipa and those wonderful garlic potatoes. Again we could not fault any of these. only to say we probably ate too much Our deserts were A cheese plate Pavlova, Panacotta aand apple and berry crumble. Delicious. The staff were very helpful and attentive. We also had a bottle of wine. All this worked out at 50 euro per person. Which for us was great. Cant wait to return again.

It has to be said that this place had a great name back in the day (won pub of the year in 2002) but after our (party of 5) last 2 visits we will not be returning. We always eat in the bar here so I cannot comment on the restaurant upstairs. The decor could do with a major overhaul to bring it into the 21st century! Also, the waiting staff's uniforms could also be updated- dickie bows in a bar? really? Also the crumb-floor sweeper that is kicked into gear after each table finishes is a bit much! By all means the seafood here is usually very good- bar the chowder which was so thick is had no liquid element to it whatsoever! We found it overpriced and well below average for bar food. If you do venture here, stick to the seafood!

Dinner for 4 persons food was good, service was not up to its usual standard. The restaurant was far more comfortable. average cost per person €45 without drink. Food is always very good, bar area is cheaper but not as comfortable

Best described as hit and miss. I have eaten here a number of times, the ,the restaurant food is of a much higher standard but you definitely pay for the quality you receive, however the bar food can vary between excellent and average, and has the potential to be expensive The staff are always very helpful and there is always a good atmosphere when food is being served. Not the best place to have a drink after, if it slips beyond 11 o clock you might be the only couple / group left sipping your after dinner drinks!

The Bosun has a bar menu and a separate restaurant. The bar menu is more popular as the prices are more reasonable. The decor in the restaurant is looking a bit dated now. Overall the food quality and service is very good. Beware the prices though! A cup of tea of coffee is €3.25, add a 10% tip and that's € 3.57 added to your bill. It would be cheaper to buy a pint of Beamish!!

Have eaten here a number of times and won't be returning. This place is basically not great value for money. The last time I ate here the food had been reheated so much my partner's lasange had dried up and stuck to the bowl. My plate was scorching hot and my salmon completely dried up. I wouldn't recommend this place as a great seafood restaurant (i don't know where their reputation for great seafood came from) - it's only average - and I love my seafood. Service and ambience were the only positives and even then it's hit and miss. Disapponting to say the least.

Ate here for my mother in laws birthday. Superb! Beautiful food, beautiful location and overall a very happy experience. I had the cod and it was flawless my wife had a lovely little chicken and bacon salad for starters. It is a tad pricey but this restaurant is worth it. Very professional service and was almost unable to finish my meal such was the quantity of food furnished to us. If in the area a must.

On my first trip to Cork I ate here, and have returned a number of times since. The seafood is the speciality - Delicious open sandwiches. The food is honest, simple and fresh - the way it should be. Particularly nice to sit out on a sunny day.

Good food.... A little on the pricey side the staff are friendly on the whole. The chicken is a good substantial meal as is the steak. My friend loves the seafood and it is always fresh.. the atmosphere is slightly offputing as it is a little pokey
