Stayed at this hotel and went to the restaurant one of the evenings just to have some ice cream. It wasnt busy at all yet we waited 20-25 minutes to be served! I didnt think it took that long to scoop some ice cream..The cooked breakfast was nice but the pastries and bread rolls should definitely be covers as there were flies around them.. One staff member in particular was really rude.

Went here on Sunday for lunch, It was quiet enough inside, few people sitting out in the sun on the deck part, empty enough inside, we ordered soup for starters, no choice whatsoever for starters, is soup or chowder! The soup was cold and we had to wait for cutlery to be brought down after we got the soups! Then we had to wait for the bread! The soup was tasty but not hot enough, We both ordered plaice with a herb crust served with potatoes and veg and one portion of chips. We were serves the food and had to wait for the cutlery again! The meal wasnt one bit nice, the fish absoutely tasteless, the mash underneath was like supermash, the veg were horrible and there was 1 small baby potatoe cut in two which was green looking, the chips were chunky and they were like rocks when I bit into them, hard out. Service was terrible and they werent even packed. Never again. Food awful, Complete waste of money.

Never again. This is a 'restaurant' in a small hotel, and so the dining room is also where guests have breakfast - and it shows. Prices for starters were reasonable at around €5.50, but mains were extremely expensive (for what you got) at €22. We had a herb chicken starter with parma ham, and a goats cheese bruchetta. The chicken lacked flavour and was overpowered from the dried herbs that killed it off. Mains were a fillet of sea bass which was fine. The duck had seen better days, it was served as two legs over roast potatoes. Very fatty, dried out skin, dry meat. Not great. We had two glasses of house wine, both were unpalatable. The only good thing about Jacobs Ladder is the amazing view across Cobh harbour. Never again.

I used to enjoy eating in this restaurant but I was really let down on my last visit. They seem to be trying out some value menu for Sunday lunch but it's never value when the food is bad. The starter was a choice between soup and chowder - not much of a choice. The mains were tough and there were only 2 deserts, one of which was simply ice-cream. Worst of all was the service, when there was a mix up in the order we were told we would have to pay for an additional main course if we wanted to change it.

Wasted potential. My fiance & I ate here for lunch, I had the fish & chips while my partner opted for the open seafood sandwich. The food was very tasty & well presented but the menu was quite pricey for lunch. Service was appalingly slow, we were waiting 15 minutes for a menu & the service continued slowly throughout our meal. My fish & chips didnt come with a slice of lemon strangely so I had to ask for one. Overall a lot of wasted potential, they need to improve a lot on service & value for money.

Such a shame, because the food is actually quite good. I had the trio of open seafood sandwiches, and my partner had the fish and chips. Both were excellent. However having to wait 15 minutes to be even offered a menu is a bit much. Service was very slow and unattentive, on a wednesday late afternoon when there were only 3 - 4 tables seated.. I also asked the waitress if the smoked salmon was sourced locally but she didn't know, nor did she offer to find out, which in my opinion is very shoddy. Didn't leave a tip as service was very poor but the food is decent. In my opinion that isn't enough at the prices they charge. Im prove the service and maybe I'll be back.
