The Fern House Cafe at Avoca Kilmacanogue, Kilmacanogue

The Fern House is a beautifully bright and airy table service restaurant with tall windows opening out to its own paved terrace. Built in the style of a Victorian fern house, it's spacious and plant-filled - including orange & lemon trees.

Was an invited Guest to the Fern Cafe as part of a group booking. Table had been booked a month in advance and confirmed 1 week prior to 5th, yet on arrival, NO BOOKING. On arrival It was obvious that none of the waiting staff were not prepared to take over the table and consequently we were constantly looking for cutlery, delph, etc. The antipasti and soup was delicious other than waiting approx 20 mins for extra bread. The main courses left lot to be desired. The fish pie was so hot it was inedible, the risotto with asparagus was so soggy it certainly looked like it had been cooked long time in advance. The choice of main courses was so disappointing. The atmosphere was very pleasant except for the fact that I was placed at the end of a tressle table with no leg room and so uncomfortable. I would not have any desire to visit your Fern Cafe in the future.

Went for a long awaited breakfast here in the Fern House Avoca, had heard many good reports. Over the weekend you def need to book which is mad to think for breakfast but just shows how popular it is. The breakfast menu is very varied and carries plenty of choice. Considering the mega portions that value is reasonable as well, though the service charge of 10% bit annoying. Had the full irish breakfast and was one of the nicest have ever had, def will be back. All the staff were extremely friendly and professional as well.

Restaurant was lovely outside and inside. Lovely atmosphere but unfortunately the chairs were uncomfortable. A bit disappointed that there was only 5 red wines to choose from with the cheapest being €28. The wine we choose was very good (but it should be considering it cost €36) I choose the ravioli and the pork belly, my husband choose the goats cheese and the steak. The amuse bouche was a great start - beautiful celeriac soup. We then waited and waited, so long that the staff brought us a 2nd amuse bouche. Finally the starters arrived after about 30mins. Goat cheese starter was delicious, but the ravioli was too thick and not cooked so I had to send it back. Floor manager immediately apologised and took it off the bill. The 2nd try was no better. The pork belly was lovely but none of the accommpaniments complimented it. My husbands steak was good but was served with enough green beans to feed a family of 4 for a week. I really wanted to like this restaurant but unfortunately it has ideas of granduer, too expensive for what was served, on the plus side the staff were very good.
