Glasson Village Restaurant, Athlone

Glasson Village Restaurant - an award winning family run restaurant (est.1986) offering an extensive imaginative menu of modern Irish cuisine from the best of locally sourced ingredients. Situated in the beautiful village of Glasson, close to Lough Ree and it’s waterside woodland walks, boating, fishing and the highly acclaimed Glasson Golf course, this 200 year old listed building is packed with charm and character. The restaurant being just over an hours drive to the east coast and less than an hour to the west coast, has a great selection of fresh seafood and offers daily specials. It is proud to have achieved B. I. M. Seafood Circle membership year after year. As well as fresh seafood, Michael also sources the best quality meats, vegetables, game when in season, local Irish Hereford beef and other local produce, when possible. An award winning restaurant listed in all major guides.

My husband and I dined here on a Tuesday evening so the restaurant was quite quiet and this did detract from the atmosphere slightly as we felt we were watched a little too closely and plates cleared while still chewing the last mouthful etc. That said, the waiting staff were really pleasant and welcoming and the food was nice. I thought starter portions were large until I saw the main courses which were huge. We both had pork mains and while I would describe this as homely type food, it's probably carvery standard and both mains were really swimming in the gravy type sauces. There was so much food on the plate, it was actually difficult to cut the meat. The descriptions of the food on the menu weren't great and the waiting staff didn't shed enough light in some cases so I felt quite limited in what I would choose to eat. At one point I asked if the colcannon was made with cabbage or kale and was informed that in this part of the world, it's made with spring onions. Isn't this champ, not colcannon? If you're in the mood for homely food with friendly service this is the place for you. Haute cuisine it isn't but it's honest to goodness food and service and every so often, that will do.

The Glasson Village Restaurant is an upscale eatery located outside of Athlone. My family and I went this past weekend for my brother's birthday. There were nine in our party, and the staff were kind enough to give us a private room in their quaint restaurant, which gives one the feeling of eating in a country cottage. Before we ordered they brought an assortment of nice bread to the table. We all ordered starters and main courses. The starters arrived quickly, and were of high quality in general. The only complaint was that the mussels were more garlic and bread crumbs than mussels. Glasson Village is a seasonal restaurant, so the menu changes regularly based on what is available. There was one vegetarian selection on the menu which we quickly discovered they didn't in fact have. It was, however, not a problem as they offered three perfectly suitable alternative options.Everyone was pleased with the quality of their main meals. Dessert was had and enjoyed by some. All in all the service was exemplary; the waitstaff checked on us frequently, but not excessively. Although Glasson Village is not for those who are on a budget (with the average main course ranging from 25-30 euro), it is a very good choice for a special occasion.

I had been to Glasson village previously and enjoyed it but last time was about 2 years ago. I visited there on Friday evening and availed og the early bird (4 courses for €30). The starters and mains were very good (cashel blue and chirozo salad, cod gougons, duck, scallops) but the desserts were a let down, I had icecream in a (very very dry )choux bun and my husband had pear tart, also dry. The coffee was dire, had been stewing for quite a while, no excuse. Atmosphere ok but they need to up their game to remain competetive.
