I have been to this restaurant on several occasions but will unfortunately not be returning again. The main reason for this is one particular male member of staff who has been consistently rude and unwelcoming each time I have visited (I have only returned in the past as I live nearby but will be venturing further afield from now on!).
The last time I visited with my partner he approached our table with an abrupt "Are you ready?" within about 60 seconds of sitting down and looked incredibly affronted when we asked if we could have another couple of minutes.
I had ordered one of their 'gourmet sandwiches' which turned out to be a paltry amount of crab meat on what appeared to be store-bought brown bread accompanied by a miserable salad - not what you expect for a tenner.
There are plenty of restaurants near this area that offer better value for money, nicer food and far superior customer service.

Droped in for lunch on way to Limerick from Dublin. Very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food having seen some of the awful reviews by other diners. I had the home-made burger, plain, without any garnish or sauce. Lovely flavour and very tender meat, served with hot chips. My husband had the home-made vegetable soup which I tasted and we both agreed that it was really nice and tasted of a good stock. Toasted Ham and cheese sandwich was made with large portion of "real" ham. Absolutely no complaints. On the strength of this lunch, called in again later in the week on our way back to Dublin. This time both of us had the burgers, one plain and the other with all the trimmings. Again, both burgers were lovely, served with really good chips. Service quick and friendly. Will definitely go back again. Very reasonable. Wish there were more places like this in Dublin.

Visited here on bank holiday Monday lunch time, while travelling. Menu made me think we were in a high end restaurant, akin to a speciality steak house. How wrong can one be? Despite the expensive menu, claiming to be high quality food, the owner swanning about as if he is maitre 'd in a fine dining restaurant our food was really pretty basic!
The waitress messed up our order of 2 completely differently cooked steaks and then told us to sort ourselves out. The aforementioned steaks were really poor, greasy, fatty and we sent more back than we ate. Baked potato I had was disgusting, so full of eyes I felt it was looking at me! The best thing about the place was the frozen chips!! Main problem...when taking plates back, waiting staff should ask if everything was okay, especially when a couple send back more of two €26 steaks than they eat. My advice, Matt should go back to threshing and you should keep driving by!!

Apparently it's an award winning restaurant.
Well i don't know where the judges have eaten before but the place is ridiculous. Very expensive, food comes out half cooked and cold. Asked for well done fillet steak, it was cheap cut, and came out medium/rare after waiting 40 minutes for it.
The owner especially but the staff as well has and awful disguting attitude.
I wouldn't even recommend this place to my enemies!!!

Well done Matt the Thresher on winning "Best Gastro Pub" 2010 for Tipperary as voted by the Restaurant assoc. of Ireland and on the many other awards you have over the past 20 years.
Our family always stop here as the food is delicious, the service excellent and we always get a warm welcome. We would highly recommend Matts if your looking for good food and value on the main Dublin / Limerick road.

This is a place which I have often visited over the years, It very handy as it was on the main Limerick / Dublin route.Nowadays it has been bypassed but as I live in Tipperary I still pass it frequently.Last Tuesday I stopped for a bite to eat with my family, That is my partner and son. From the minute we entered the door we felt unwelcome, I am just sorry I did not go with my instints and leave.Instead we walked to the back of the restaurant where we found a table. Our son is under 2 years. The man behind the counter came out and asked us if we wanted anything to eat, This was within seconds of sitting down,as we had been there before we knew what we wanted and ordered our food.Even before it arrived this man had his eyes fixed firmly on us.Any movement from our son was meet by a look of disapproval. It was so uncomfortable that when I finished my meal I took my son outside to the car leaving my partner to finish meal and pay.Our son caused no bother, he sat and had his botttle and had his little chat with us.My own background is in the hotel area.I understand that children can cause bother sometimes however because of this I am very aware of what is acceptable. We spent 30 euro and had been in this restaurant 35 mins start to finish. In these times that is not good enough. We felt very hurt, unwelcome and we wont be back,it is not child friendly and the food which was served so quickly was not at all tasty, it was very dry and had a look of been sitting under heat lamps for a long time.

1.5 Matt The Thresher (Birdhill) 1.5 star review:
Stopped here a few times over the years on the road from Kerry to Dublin and it was usually ok, however on our last stop a few weeks ago it was terrible. The menu was very poor, the Chicken and Mushroom pie I ordered was just a slop served in a desert bowl. The Chicken Wings we also ordered were very poor and chips were very skinny and tasteless. Overall it was extremely pricey for what we got and has turned us off stopping there again, we have passed by many times since and always say "never again"

We stopped there on our way to Limerick as it looked quite busy from the outside. We thought that since it's popular with the locals it must be good. How mistaken we were! The service was bad - rushing us and barely interested in customers. They had some strange, worn-out looking cushions on almost all seats and I didn't want to sit on one of them. I ordered chicken and mushroom pie which was uneatable mostly because of disgusting flour source. My husband had buffalo wings which were just ordinary. Their chips were nice though. We were hungry so we just ordered our food quickly. after ordering i noticed two things in their menu which almost made me leave. One was mentioned by a person before me - kids are not welcome there and it is said quite openly. Another thing is they don't accept individual payments, you need to pay as a group. Is is what you would call customer service? Oh, and the food was really overpriced. Definitely will not be coming back!

Stopped here on my way home after a long drive with my young child. On arrival I asked where the toilets were located and was informed rather rudely that I would have to place an order before using the toilets as they were for customers only. I ordered a fairly pricy children’s meal (which turned out to be a very small portion) for my child and coffee and cake for me – the response by the waiter was “is that it” with attitude. The portions were small and overpriced and the food was ok but there was nothing special about it. The waiter appeared to be looking at my child like he was an alien and on viewing the menu further I noted that it states something like “although your children are welcome in Matt the Threshers they must remain seated and under control at all times. In the event of them making noise they must be removed from the premises”. I wish I had seen this before I ordered as I would have removed both myself and child from their premises. I have a child not a dog! And I seriously resent restaurants that thinks children are 2nd class citizens. I would recommend this restaurant to no-one and I think anyone with children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews etc should avoid it as a matter of principle.

Stopped there for breakfat as it's on main Dublin - Limerick road.
They server the traditional Irish or you can chose to have scrambled eggs with toast or bacon and egg on a bap.
The food was just OK, nothing special I thought. Bit pricey - Dublin prices for a country food.
