Ghan House, Carlingford

The restaurant – in the drawing room or ground floor dining room has views of the gardens and Mourne Mountains. We use herbs from our herb garden and are fortunate enough to have an abundance of superb shellfish from the lough ~ oysters, mussels, cockles, winkles and lobster for example.

I noticed that the last review for Ghan House was posted in 2009, well its about time to bring it up to date, myself and my wife have just left after a lovely evening, we arrived a little early and we had two glasses of sparkling Italian while we looked over the menu in the small welcoming bar. We ordered and were brought up to the dining room which was pure old school but in a great way, each table was laid in crisp linen with a candle little flower arrangement proper full set up of cutlery, this may seem petty but sometimes this attention to detail matters when so many restaurants go for as little as possible on a table. To the food, a little smoked salmon fishcake to tickle the tastebuds followed by my choice scallops with a blackpudding filo cigar it was a great plate of food well presented with great balance of flavours, for my wife an excellent rabbit terrine. I had a wonderful rack of lamb served with a shank pasty and crisp belly which was perfectly cooked. My chocolate delice with cherries was another great plate well presented and did not fail with the taste. We enjoyed a wonderful Puligny Montrachet along with a nice Rioja and a lovely Californian Muscat with the chocolate delice. oh and I forgot to mention the wonderful plate of pasta cooked with a little butter and cheese that was served to my 2.5 year old little girl which she declared was delicious. Ghan House has a great reputation as a location that serves great food, tonight they proved to myself and my wife ( and daughter ) that its a reputation that is well earned, Thank you Paul and staff for a lovely evening.

Like many others I too was excited to be finally trying the food at Ghan, the web site gives the impression of a foodies paradise with references to home made bread and locally sourced food. Unfortunately the food doesn't live up to the marketing. Our meal started with half a small cooked cold potato with some salmon mousse, drab and dated in both taste and presentation. Next came starter of prawns & scallop (note the singular scallop) which was 2 overcooked prawns and 1 scallop on overly cold and tasteless sushi rolls. I ordered the steak, medium rare for main which was chewy and came with a selection of mushrooms that were as old and tough as the steak. To finish i had the lemon tart which was quite good but the accompanying limoncello ice cream wasn't great. This place gives the impression that it may have been impressive in it's day but now it's tired and out dated.
