Lethean Cafe Bar

65 Main Street, Portlaoise

I m a regular here but just cos its handy and close to work. Gastro is wrote on the front of the pub. hmmmm. bog standard food. service is good mostly. too many heavey drinkers at the bar which ruins the ambience.the burger was seriously dry on my last visit. burnt and no sauce. basic menu that needs updating. has great potential location wise but someone needs to get creative. fish and chips ? exciting. burger and chips? great. shepards pie? who are you? think outside the dirty box.

Kelly's Foundry Grillhouse

Portlaoise Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise

av been here on 4 occasions. nice ambience open planned can see ur food been cooked. staff seemed flusterred on all occasions. silly thing s like no salt and pepper on our table on 2 occasions. please chefs learn how to cook a steak! i always ask for it rare when i really want it medium cos it ll be burnt if i ask for it medium. great potentiale but the above always lets the place down plus i personally think tis place is well overpriced. I ve tried this place 4 times now and always annoyed, i aint that picky either.

Seasons Restaurant (Portlaoise)

24A Market Square, Portlaoise

Called in to Seasons on our way back from Kinsale, and had a very pleasant meal, in very comfortable surroundings. We had been eating all week-end, so our appetites were small, but both main courses were very good. This is a real find, to break the journey from either Cork or Limerick. Good and friendly service, and tasty food with some nice and unexpected touches - this restaurant deserves to do well. Recommended

Kingfisher Restaurant

Old AIB, Main Street, Portlaoise, Portlaoise

I went to the kingfisher with my family and I had high expectations due to the awards the restaurant has received. The food was delicious and the portion sizes were good too. I had aloo tikki for starters and it was really tasty, I tried some of the vegetable samosa and the tikka chicken and they were also really nice. For my mains I had chicken korma which was delicious but my partner had lamb rogan josh which was a little bland (he had asked for extra spice) the bill was very reasonable too, it worked out at 30 euro a head between 6 which included two bottles of wine and beers. The things I found to be disappointing were that we were left waiting a long time before our order was taken, we were never offered dessert menus. They could also improve on the little things like perhaps complimentary mints with the bill just to make the experience extra special. I would recommend this restaurant to a friend as it is quite nice but I don't think I would go back as I have been to other Indian restaurants in the Laois area which exceed this one.

Mayur Restaurant

Main Street, Portlaoise

Best Indian I've eaten in anywhere. Can be quite midweek (but what restaurant isn't nowadays), that's why I gave it a 3 for atmosphere. Myself and my wife eat there often and normally go for the early bird or the gourmet meal for two.Very good value. You get a mixed platter for starter. Yummy. And a good choice for mains. Try the Lamb Madras, it's to die for. Food is always 100%. Service is very good and the two front of house guys are very friendly and helpful and not in your face like some restaurants. If you don't like this Indian people, there's something seriously wrong with you.

The Copper Kettle (Laois)

The Square , Durrow

We broke our journey to Cork with a detour into Durrow and the Copper Kettle. The whole premises (toilets included!) were spotlessly clean and comfortably furnished in a 'country cottage' style, the seating area was however quite cold so we kept our jackets on! We had coffees, a tea, some fabulous fruitcake and a scone, everything was very tasty and had a lovely homecooked feel to it! Service was friendly and speedy. Definitely a place to consider on the road to Cork!

Shalimar Restaurant

Wilton House, Main St, Portarlington

I can't say enough nice things about this place, the staff are so friendly and the interior is warm and cosy. i went with my family of 7 to shalimar just after christmas and i found it to be very good value and the food was superb. we all had different dishes and each was so packed with flavour. we were given complimentary poppadoms with a mango dip which was a nice touch. i will definitely be going back sometime soon :)

Spago Italian Bistro

Portlaois Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise

I visited Spago on Saturday night for a family birthday. We booked a table for 8:30 pm and it was jam packed when we arrived. We were seated quickly and ignored until 9.10pm before our drink orders were taken. it took a further 15 minutes for our drinks to arrive, we had little luck getting a glass of water having to ask two different servers for glasses of water so we were in the restaurant for 50 minutes before getting any drinks. The starters arrived along with the drinks by this point I was irritated because the restaurant was way too hot, there didn't appear to be any air conditioning and the lack of customer service was really grating on my nerves. The starters were lovely however and this redeemed the bad service a little. the main courses arrived and the orders were wrong on 4 of the 6 main courses ordered and had to be fixed, i ordered the pollo alla maiale which according to the menu is chicken, stuffed with cream cheese wrapped in parma ham, my chicken didn't come out wrapped in parma ham which was disappointing. I ordered a side order of pasta with my chicken, I got wedges when I pointed this out to the server he apologised and said he would get the pasta....... it never came!! I was really annoyed as it meant I paid 19.50 euro for a bit of chicken!! We were never asked did we want any more drinks after our initial bottle of wine either, I was really annoyed overall with this trip to Spago, having been here many times before and found it to be lovely, I felt it was a big let down. I don't think I will go back here again after this disastrous trip.

Great India Restaurant

French Church Street, Portarlington

Had dinner here when in the area visiting friends. I had lamb masala and companion had Lamb Khuno (may be wrong spelling) both were delicious and the lamb was melt in the mouth, service was excellent and as there was only one other table of two there was not much atmosphere. They seemed to be doing a good business in take away meals. With two coffees and and glass of white wine we left very happy, that is until we noticed on the way out a board advertising a three course meal for a special price. We felt that this menu should have also been offered to us when ordering. We would go back as the food was lovely but making sure we read the special board before ordering.
