5.0 Swans Chinese Restaurant (Kilkenny) 5.0 star review:
.This is a lovely restaurant restaurant. Can’t remember the last time I encountered such pleasant and good humoured staff. While it was fairly quiet when we arrived, it didn’t take long before all tables were occupied, and as soon as we tasted the food we realised why Swans is such a popular dining spot. Had the Meat Sung (for 2 people) to start (absolutely mouth-watering) followed by Beef Kung Po (to die for). My dining companion had Chicken in Honey and Plum Sauce, which was also excellent (I know this because I stole some of it!). The portions are very generous and we were left to enjoy our meal in peace. Tables were cleaned down promptly and the white linen table napkins were twisted and folded into shapes that looked like water lilies. All in all, a really nice place to have a good meal, with great service and value for money.

5.0 Swans Chinese Restaurant (Kilkenny) 5.0 star review:
Had intended dining Italian but on finding the two restaurants we fancied were book out booked out, we walked a few hundred yards back up The Parade and stumbled upon Swans – and what a find! It’s up a narrow staircase right off the street, so it would be very easy to walk past it. First impression was how lovely and modern it looked inside, not at all the usual red and gold décor of the traditional Chinese restaurant. It’s quite spacious too and it’s on a corner on the first floor, so most diners will have some view of Kilkenny Castle which is just up the road to the left. Have to admit, the outside of the restaurant doesn’t do it any justice and can be a bit misleading. The staff were absolutely charming from the minute we stepped inside, and we were shown to a lovely quiet table. Needless to say we were very pleased to be able to get a table without any trouble on a Friday evening. There was one long table of diners celebrating a birthday, and bit by bit, the restaurant filled up. A jug of water and warm prawn crackers were brought to our table immediately and we were left to peruse the menu. The menu and wine list are a bit limited, but the quality of the food more than made up for it. Make sure you are good and hungry before going to Swans, as you will be surprised at the huge portions they serve. The food was excellent and cooked to perfection. The wine we chose, while a bit on the expensive side, was the perfect accompaniment to our meal and we will most definitely visit Swans again next time we are in Kilkenny. (We were so glad in the end that the Italian restaurants were booked out!)

3.0 Swans Chinese Restaurant (Kilkenny) 3.0 star review:
This restaurant was very quiet on the evening of our visit. One of us decided on a dish from the set menu, the other from a la carte. The sweet and sour chicken with fried rice was fine. The beef with black pepper sauce was not great but he noodles were fine. A bottle of red wine, at €15, was good value and a very nice one.Nobody approached us during the meal to ask how it was. We were not impressed when the bill came and we discovered that an extra charge of €4 had been applied to the bill because we had requested noodles instead of rice and.fried rather than boiled rice. Our query in relation to this didn't elicit any great response. We were left with the impression that the person who served us may not have had a great deal of English. I won't be back.

We came from Dublin and were looking for a curry. Found this place, for starters we had 3 portions of chicken skewers, v. nice, for mains me and hubby had chicken curry with boiled rice, nice again. Our daughter had sweet and sour chicken the sauce was like thick tar than juicy. She didn’t like it. For dessert I had Baileys cheecake, nice he had ice cream and ouir daughter had profiteroles or something. Overall it was v good value at €49.50. We were happy and staff seemed nice but there was only 4 other ppl there.

On a visit from Dublin, we found this to be the only restaurant still open at 10.15 on a Thursday. We shared the combination starter for two - really delicious and fresh. We shared a Cantonese sizzling fillet of beef for main which was excellent. Along with two glasses of Malbec house red, the bill came to €50. Would defintely recommend. We enjoyed it so much, we went back on Saturday, something we'd never usually do. Had the combo starter again and shared a different main course, all of which weas delicious.

3.5 Swans Chinese Restaurant (Kilkenny) 3.5 star review:
The location of Swans is ideal. This visit the food was average/good. There was nothing wrong with the spring roll starter or the beef in black bean main course, but it is the same as most other Chinese restaurants. You know before you order what your food will taste like. I suppose it can be discribed as a "Safe Bet"

The selling point of this restaurant was the food - the atmosphere was a little quiet and the service was intermittent, but I had the best crispy duck pancakes ever here. The duck was cooked to perfection and wasn't made up of lots of lumps of fat, as I have found in other Chinese restaurants. The main courses were standard fare, tasty, but nothing to write home about.
