Garrett Byrne returns to his native city of Kilkenny to open his own restaurant. Campagne, located at 5 Gashouse Lane, offers modern French-style cuisine for diners who want excellence at an affordable price.

Previously head chef at one-star Michelin Chapter One Chapter One for more than five years, Garrett’s personal awards include Irish Chef of the Year and Best Dublin Chef in 2006. Before his tenure at Chapter One, Garrett worked in some of the best restaurants in Dublin and London including: Brunos, The Clarence Hotel, Quaglino’s and London’s one-star Michelin Orrery.

The opening of Campagne is good news also for Kilkenny’s food producers. Garrett is passionate about supporting artisan food producers and sourcing quality ingredients and will actively seek out local food producers to work with. “Campagne will reflect not just my own style of cooking, but the quality of using good ingredients.”

AWARDS & PRIZES

We seek out the best establishments in every part of Ireland for inclusion in our guides and, because we work independently and without charging a fee, you know that we can be trusted to lead you to the best places over a wide range of categories. Every year, the Bridgestone editors set out to find those restaurants that offer the best cooking and the best service in Ireland. This book features grand city restaurants, and tiny little one-room restaurants in the wilds of the country. There are restaurants located on islands, and restaurants that reverberate with the energy and mania of the city. In 1900, André Michelin published the first edition of a guide to France to help drivers maintain their cars, find decent lodging, and eat well while touring. In 1926, the guide introduced the star to note good cooking; two and three stars were added in the early 1930s. The guide awards one to three stars to a small number of restaurants of outstanding quality.

FACILITIES

Veggie options available Luscious Dublin Bay prawns, succulent oysters, melt in the mouth mussels, mouth-watering mackerel…just some of the delicious seafood you’ll find on menus around Ireland.

Irish people love to eat seafood when dining out; in fact, unlike our European neighbours, we eat more seafood outside the home. Perhaps this is a testament to the quality of our seafood restaurants. And for many visitors, a trip to Ireland wouldn’t be complete without sampling a few oysters and sinking a pint of the black stuff. I had lunch in Campagne with my girlfirend, her mum and sister. It was exceptional value for such haute cuisine. Staff were very friendly, service was quick even though place was very busy. Next time we visit Kilkenny, we will surely go back. Would definitely recommend.

An enjoyable meal, without being exceptional. A better selection of breads would be nice!

The room is spacious, the food and service were excellent and my group availed of the early bird option which we thought was outstanding value for the quality of offering we received.

Absolutely fabulous.. went there for the early bird. Great value for money. The food was so fresh and tasty and the attention to detail by the staff was commendable.

This was the second time in a month at Campagne: fantastic food and great value (early bird menu). The service was brilliant, the hostess knows wines like few and made perfect recommendations. The venison (slow cooked for 23 hours!) can't be beaten and the whole experience is very high class, yet laid back. Staff were extremely pleasant even when we stayed on after the meal was finished to chat amongst ourselves, they continued to bring water to the table. We'll definitely return on a regular basis.

This is, hands down, the best restaurant I have been to in Ireland. The menu is simple, and the food is cooked absolutely perfectly. The service is the right mix of attentiveness without intrusion. The restaurant itself has terrific acoustics so that even if it is full, you wouldn't know that there was anyone else in the house. The prices are on the higher end, but are eminently reasonable considering the very high quality of the food. If you are in Kilkenny you MUST visit this establishment.

I was surprised at the location of this fantastic restaurant. It's on the bottom floor of a small block of apartments which are in dire need of a lick of paint. From the outside the whole area looks pretty run down and even the awnings of the restaurant are faded and drab. There's a serious lack of appeal on first impressions. However once inside, it's a different story altogether. The staff are friendly, the room is pleasant and airy. The tables are just a little closer than I'd like but not much different than every other restaurant in that respect. The early bird menu gives a surprisingly generous 5 choices for each course. All courses were excellent and of a very high standard. The only complaint I would have is that the pork belly was a little dry, but with the sauce it was still very tasty. I was surprised, given the standard of cooking and service this restaurant offers, that we had to pour own own wine throughout the meal, but overall excellent value. I would definitely return.

One of the best meals I have ever had. I could not fault it. I believe the chef came from one of the top Dublin Restuarants and if so he brought every quality from it and more. Really friendly staff and great atmosphere. The menu was very good and for the quality was reasonably priced. I have Chicken Raviolo for starters and Duck in a cherry sauce for mains and the tastes were incrediable. The people I was with had a mixture of steak, lamb and pasta dishes and theirs was equally good. I really cant say more than 5 stars and will be back as soon as I get an opportunity to head back tom Kilkenny.
