Aniar, a terroir-based restaurant, has recently opened in Galway’s West End. The word terroir is usually associated with winemaking: the combination of factors, including soil, climate, and environment, that gives a wine its distinctive character. Owned and operated by Jp McMahon and Drigín Gaffey who brought us Cava Spanish Restaurant and Tapas Bar, Aniar has set the hearts of foodies racing.

3.5 Aniar Restaurant 3.5 star review:
The décor is sparse and does not have a cozy feel but I don’t think that is the intention. Aniar is all about the produce and how it is executed.
To the food, I would like to say simplicity is the concept here and in some ways this is true were it not for the time, effort and creativity that has gone into developing the menu. Yes all the flavours are distinctive and the main component of the dish is not masked with a rich sauce, but Aniar are definitely trying to achieve something different, with starters like duck heart and liver with egg, salted beef and scallops with pork belly. I had the scallops, with pork belly and dehydrated black pudding so with three different textures it was an interesting and very tasty dish. Mains include lamb loin, confit salmon and pork belly, I chose the lamb served with baby onions, again this dish had lovely flavours and textures and I enjoyed every mouthful, sides of new potatoes came with each main course. We did have quite a wait for our main courses; this is where the intricacies of the food may have caused a problem.
The service is efficient if a little cold, although I do just think our waiter lacked a sense of humour, other than that he described the dishes well and totally seemed to get the concept of Anair. You may think this should be a given but this is not always the case.

3.0 Aniar Restaurant 3.0 star review:
I went to this restaurant with a friend. Our booking was for 7.30. We were seated promptly. We ordered a nice bottle of wine and were informed they did have it but it was not cold so we were offered an alternative. The waiter broke the cork opening the bottle and had to get another and overall this was not the best start.
Our starter was served promptly but then we waited nearly an hour for the main course.
The food was done well and the presentation was nice. We did not feel rushed but the meal but there was just too much time between the courses. The service was very slow and the serving staff seemed slightly disorganised. In the end I think we were there nearly 2.5 hours.
