4.5 The Oar House 4.5 star review:
I was pleasantly surprised by my trip to the Oar House. I had often heard it was quiet an over priced restaurant. However, I found it to be excellent value and the food was quite possibly one of the best meals out I have had in a long time. I cannot remember the exact menu I ordered from, but it was excellent value. I had perfectly cooked deep fried calamari with a Cajun mayo dip for my starter, and then for my main, I had smoked cod with home cut chips. Both were delicious and the portions were more than enough.
The only thing I have marked it down for was the atmosphere. Myself and my friends were sat at what seemed to be a make shift table but we hadn't thought about the fact it was Leaving Cert results night, so it was obviously going to be very busy.
Overall great restaurant, nice staff, excellent food, good value for money.

Nice boutique restaurant on Howth pier - food very tasty, reasonable value, nice atmosphere, nice location but SERVICE WAS AWFUL. Place was packed (luckily we had reserved a table)... no recession in this area it would appear - customers were turning away when they saw how packed it was - serving staff couldn't cope with the numbers and were slightly rude and very s-l-o-w. Every course arrived on scalding hot plate which I realised was because the serving staff couldn't keep up with the food coming out from the kitchen so chefs kept the plates under very hot grill. Bottom-line is that there are many equally nice or better restaurants in the Howth area where you'll get better and friendlier service.

We were on the menupages deal, which had plenty of choice. Service was friendly. The food was good, though our seabass was slightly overcooked. The accompanying chips and sauce were excellent. I'm glad that I wasn't paying full price for the main course, but apart from that the overall experience was enjoyable.

We visited The Oar House on a busy Saturday night having been there for lunch a couple of times. The service was very good, the waitress was very helpful allowing us to order a selection of starters as tapas instead of a main dish from the menu. The highlights were the cajun calamari, the gambas pil pil and the mussels marinare but all of the food was fantastic. I would definately recommend it to all!

Went here on the Menu pages deal. when we arrived we were warmly welcomed. Initially I was dissappointed to see that we had a different menu to the rest of the diners. But my worries were not necessary there were pleanty of options and we had no trouble in finding something we would like to eat. I had the seafood chowder to start which was very tasty and my partner had the Prawns Pil Pil although small in portion size they were very tasty. Then for mains I had the seabass and my partner had the chef's seafood grill which on the night consisted of seabass, sea trout and mackerel, we both enjoyed our mains everything cooked to our liking. Included in the deal was a bottle of red or white wine. The red wine was very drinkable. The deserts were good but after the starter and main I just wasn't able to finish it all.

We were so disapointed, food was very ordinary, the waiters are lovely, but our dinner was nothing to wow us about.

Having travelled across the city & after enduring horrendous rain to sample the smokies imagine my consternation to find, due to costing reasons, the menu had been changed the day before & the smokies were no longer on the menu. I was prepared to walk out but I asked the lovely waitress would the chef prepare it for me. She consulted him & he had the ingredients so he prepared it for me anyway & it was a dish to die for. I started off with the chowder which was very nice also. The white accompanying bread was nice but I found the brown bread a bit tasteless. There was plenty of it & butter which filled me up & I was offered more. The restaurant is nicely decorated with a nautical feel though the fact it was a bit emply took away from the atmosphere but it is a nice setting. Be aware if you're looking online that the menu may not be correct since as of yet it hasn't been updated. They have a fairly extensive specials board. The waitress also kindly wrote out the smokies recipe for me to take home. Pity due to operational reasons, which the lovely waitress explained to me about in detail, that this lovely dish had to be removed from the menu.

Four times we have driven to Howth from Kildare looking to eat here, four times we qwere told we would have to wait 1-2 hours due to reservations and being busy. Today, we struck gold, only had to wait 30 minutes, so we made the booking. And it was worth it, Now we know why it's always so busy here. 2 Adults & our 5yo Daughter were seated promptly at the time we were told we could have a seat. Straight away they brought over some crayons & pictures for our Daughter to colour in. OH went for the buffalo prawns, I went for the steamed mussels-AWESOME is the only word to describe both platters as we shared. For mains, Wife went for the calamari, while I went for the fish & chips. We were both full after mains, so we shared a toffee & apple sponge, something which went down a treat with superb coffee. Our starters were accompanied by home made bread, and we bought a loaf of the brown bread, which I can highly recommend. At one stage we went to the loo-an experience I would also recommend. Why? At the top of the stairs to the loo is a collection of old radio equipment, and along the corridor to the toilet is a small but beautiful art collection, which I believe is for sale. Any drawbacks? I would find it hard to find one, except maybe the tables were a wee bit close together, but I am really being nitty picking here. Overall, an excellent experience, the way the staff handled our 5yo was something to be commended, service was top-notch, food was superb. Now we know why it's so difficult to get a table here. But we are hooked, and will be back.
