Located on Exchequer Street in the heart of Dublin city centre.
The Green Hen is a French Bistro, offering classic dishes in a relaxed atmosphere.
Situated over two floors, they take reservations for the bar, ground floor dining room and the first floor, this is also available for private hire for groups between 20 and 30. It has its own bar and two wood burning fires. We are happy to take reservations for lunch and dinner.
We don’t take reservations for brunch; this operates on a first come first served basis.

I ate here with a friend on a busy Thursday night, we didn't have a reservation but were offered a seat at the bar while we waited only 5 mins for our table. We had a very good cocktail while we waited. Menu is excellent, very traditional French fare, and there was nothing on the menu that I wouldn't have ordered. The fish mains were particularly good, I had an excellently cooked and presented piece of hake and my friend had a beautiful salmon dish 3 ways. We had a lovely waitress, very knowledgeable about wine, and recommended one that was just right for us.The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, its small, but it feels very Parisian. The only negative is that the Maitre D seemed a little flustered as they were busy. while we were shown to our table quickly and it was great to get one without a booking, he just didn't come across as very friendly or welcoming.
I will eat here again, but if its for a Fri or Sat evening I will make a reservation as its small and obviously popular.Prices are standard for city centre, and having such a nice waitress was great.

This was my first time eating here and I was quite impressed. We had the lunch/ early bird menu and it both found it tasty and good value. The room is quite atmospheric and the staff were friendly. Daube of beef starter was the star of the show. With a little more attention to detail it could rival some michellin starred restaurants.

Ordered a rib eye steak - medium to well and it came out well done. It was clear to see it was already cooked and had just been thrown on the pan to heat it up again before serving to me(New Years Eve so a busy night for the restaurant) Also on top of that it was a poor piece of rib eye as it came out in two skinny pieces instead of a proper decent sized piece.
I left pretty much 75% of the steak on my plate and in any decent restaurant a waiter would ask was there a problem seeing as I hardly ate any of it but here they didn't even ask (they probably knew it was a poor piece of meat and already pre-cooked).
The chocolate orange brownie was overpowered completely by the orange, way to much orange.
Safe to say I wont be eating here again.
Even looking at that last few reviews for this place before we ate here - it should of had the alarm bells ringing.

The Green Hen should have been a lovely place to visit but I'm not sure I'll be back. The girl that served us was charming though I can't say the same for the food. I would have thought that a half French restaurant would know how to cook duck, but mine was overdone and the sauce didn't quite go with it.
My partner had soup and lamb which he said was fine, but didn't rave about it.
Having said that there is a nice atmosphere but the tables are tiny and very close together. All in all I found it quite expensive, even for an early bird - don't think I'll be rushing back unfortunately.

Had Lunch here with some friends. It cost 25 for three courses with no tea/coffee. This puts the price in line with some of Dublin’s top restaurants for lunch and the menu certainly sounds delicious.
The downstairs is beautiful and has a nice atmosphere.
Unfortunately the food was not up to par and the service was also quite poor.
Service: Although it was only 12:30 and not too busy we were asked to order all 3 courses together, the service was slow and there was quite a gap between when each person in our group of 4 was served. As a result some of the food was cold by the time the party was ready to eat.
Food: I had Steak Tartar for starter which was only ok. The quail egg was hard and lacked flavour. Friend had crab salad that also lacked any flavour of crab, It was like the chef forgot to taste what was being served.
For main I had Pheasant. There was plenty of meat but it was quite dry and there was very little source (celeriac puree) served on the plate. There was only a small portion of veg on the plate and no sides of veg were served. It had truffle mash that seemed like ordinary mash but the baby artichoke was the best part of the meal. My friend had a steak which was good size an nicely cooked but came out cold.
For desert I had a very nice chocolate brownie. Friend had a lavender Crème Brulee with Mint Ice Cream. This did not work, it was ill conceived idea and poorly executed. The flavours did not work and the Crème Brulee was extremely runny.
Coffees were fine but did not come with chocolate or biscuit.

I had heard so many good things about this restaurant, I was really looking forward to a meal her but was very disappointed.
The first indicator that it wasn't going to be the most enjoyable experience was while making the reservation. I found the man to be very abrupt and almost a bit huffy on the phone.
On arrival we were greeted by the friendly staff. The biggest disappointment was how rushed the meal was. We ordered out starter and cocktails. I went to the toilet straight away and our starter was on the table as soon as I got back. No time to enjoy my cocktail as an aperitif, as suggested by the waitress. We no sooner had finished the starter when the main course arrived. It felt so rushed. We sat at our table at 8:05 and the whole meal was over by 8:40 with a bill of €73. And the food was Ok. I got the vegetarian tart, bland eoungh with no sides €16.
I'd prefer to lazily enjoy my food and conversation. At no point were we told that they needed the table back. Definitely will not be returning here again.

I didn't even visit it this restaurant and from the complete rudeness of the staff member when I called to make a reservation I never will. In an economy where businesses are doing their all to survive, I was completely surprised by the attitude of the staff member who made it feel like I was wasting his time.

Tried to make a reservation for this restaurant through menupages but ended up having to phone to make it as they never came back to me via menu pages. Anyway I got my lunchtime bank holiday reservation in the end. This restaurant is warm, cosy and quite 'bistro' like. Tables are quite close together so you wouldnt want to me looking for intimacy! we went for the lunch deal 19 euros for 3 courses - which is amazing value! I will say that starters were pretty small ("where the rest of it'? was my others half remark at this beef carpacio) however it was tasty! Main courses were good and desert (chocolate brownie) was truly 'to die for' - a truly decadent brownie! we had 3 glasses of wine and 2 coffees as well as the set lunch - total 74 euroes - rolled out of there feeling absolutely stuffed! Service was pleasant, efficient and with a smile! Will certainly be back for lunch!

Had a horrible horrific experience here last night - still very upset and cross about it !! It was my 2nd visit to the restaurant & even though we found the manager very rude on first visit and service very slow, the food was so good I returned with a friend whom is a regular there. We had been told the table was needed back by 9pm - our bill was presented to us at 8.45pm, fair enough. I had just finshed my coffee at 9pm and my friend was still drinking her cocktail when the waitress came and asked us to leave the table immediatley as they needed it back. We said that was no problem, I had my coat & scarf on anyway but my friend asked could she finish her drink at the bar ( which may i add was empty !! ) but the waitress said no, our table was due back and they were booked up. She wasnt "allowed" leave table with end of drink. She said she would double check with the manager and on her return we asked could we speak to him - Since the bar was empty and we had just spent 140euro there i thought it extremly rude & cheeky to ask us to leave without finishing a very obviously, almost empty drink !! the manager came down to the table - he told my friend she was very rude and we had to leave, he then walked away !! i was just appalled and very embarressed. i cancelled a further reservation i had made for a few wks time and am just shocked that we were treated that way in this current climate - they obviously arent banking on repeat business if he will treat his customers that way !!! such a pity as the food really was impressive - hat off to the chefs, however, to spend that money on a rare night out and to be treated that way - horrific !!!!
