Shanahan’s on the Green, City Centre South

In addition to a creative and sumptuous menu, which features traditional steaks and Ireland's native seafood combined with hearty side dishes and exquisite pastries, Shanahan's has the finest in gracious service. The elegance of the food and service, however, is maintained in perfect harmony with the warmth, which personifies Ireland's population, and a casual atmosphere that allows each patron to feel at home. From "The Oval Office", the restaurant's downstairs bar featuring historical documents and mementoes from each of America's presidents of Irish Heritage to the dining and private rooms which reflect the exquisite Irish workmanship of both the building's heritage and today, Shanahan's is a blend of both cultures and history. To predict the success of this unique blending process is simple when Shanahan's on the Green is viewed as a reflection of its founder, John M. Shanahan. An American entrepreneur who maintains dual citizenship in Ireland and the United States, Mr. Shanahan has long been recognized for his creativity and innovation in the merger of the philosophies underlying product development, marketing and service. To Shanahan's on the Green, he has brought his pride in his Irish heritage and his love of both the warmth and beauty which defines the Irish spirit combined with his American upbringing and the principals of marketing and service established in the competitive American market place. Mr. Shanahan embarked upon Shanahan's on the Green to capture the opportunity to bring together his love of cooking and gourmet fare with his passion for Ireland and the heritage which he has always credited as the source of his creative spirit. Shanahan's on the Green indeed encapsulates that Irish magic and American finesse and brings to its patrons and staff a sense of the pure pleasure the marriage of these two cultures is destined to establish. We are closed 25th, 26th, 27th of December. We re-open for dinner on December 28th.

I tend to visit Shanahans only two / three times a year and one of these occasions is always at Christmas when a gang of us get together for our annual Christmas Lunch. Since 2004 this has been in Shanahans. I retuned there in October for a meal with my wife and as usual the food was fantastic. The bread at the start, the onion rings and the steaks are always great. However they really need to cop on with the prices and realise that when every other restaurant in the country is fighting for business they cannot continue charging exorbitant prices for a steak, regardless of how good it is. There are several other establishments close by with quality exceptional quality steak at half the price of Shanahans. I had assumed that they would have reduced prices but was amazed to still see starters at €20 plus and an 8 oz Steak at almost €50. This is before ordering any additional rings etc!! I will admit the food is great but no greater then several other city centre restaurants. Needless to say we have decided to move the party of 16‘s Christmas Lunch to another venue in Dublin 2 who are offering some value and trying to entice people into the restaurant. Shanahans, great grub but please cop on! It may explain why the restaurant was almost empty the night we attended.

I never thought I'd actually eat here, I always thought it was far too expensive (though always wanted to anyway!) It was such a nice surprise then, when my father visited from the US & took my husband & I there for because he fancied "a great steak". A great steak indeed! Though we hadn't planned on it, we all went for the Early Bird. There was a good selection, and the Petit Filet was more than enough when you have three courses plus side dishes. The food was divine, I couldn't fault a thing. The service was top notch. The wine was fabulous (though the wine will push your bill up), and as a bonus, the waiter knew the wine list inside out. I had thought it might be a little 'stuffy', but it was nothing of the sort - we all found the atmosphere very relaxed and calm.. and we're already looking forward to our next visit back!

Have gone here a few times for the early bird/pre theatre menu. A couple of times with the girls and once with my husband. Fantastic food. I've always gone for the Petit Filet steak which is cooked to perfection and comes with lovely creamed spinach and onion rings. Every time I've been there the food has been outstanding and good value for money for the ordinary individual at 45 euro for 3 courses. Once the hot chocolate fondant wasn't on the menu and the chef did it especially for us. One complaint my husband would have was he ordered the mussels for starter and there was quite a few unopened ones which should have been taken off before the dish before they came out. When he mentioned it the waiter said they were cooked but just didn't open! We explained you couldn't eat those ones. He didn't understand.
