Cafe Novo , City Centre South

Café Novo, a chic new international bar and brasserie opens it doors. This fun and flirty eatery will woo diners with a carefully selected menu that offers traditional favourites with a twist - making it the perfect brunch stop for peckish shoppers or evening dinner and drinks spot for city slickers. Conveniently located on Harry Street, just a few steps from Grafton Street, Café Novo offers informal style drop–in dining, whether you want to grab a modern take on a club sandwich or to simply sip on a cocktail. The décor has a distinctly retro feel, created with floor to ceiling concertina windows opening on to Clarendon Street, comfy brown leather chairs, vibrant orange sofas and a print homage to 50’s Americana adorning the wall. The menu was created by award-winning international chef John Wood, and consists of playful and nostalgically modern options that will have your mouth watering – but without your jaw dropping at the price. Café Novo’s wine list includes over 35 quality wines, all moderately priced, with something for every palate. The cocktails menu is sure to be a hit with fun and quirky cocktails such as ‘Create your own Mojito’ made with Bacardi, lime, fresh mint, white sugar and your choice of just about any fruit; the ‘Coco Chanel’ with Tanqueray gin, coffee liquor and heavy cream; or try the very patriotic ‘Blarney Stone’ made with Bushmills, Sambuca, Grand Marnier, cherry liquor, and twist of orange peel.

I visited Café Novo for the first time on December 28th 2011 after recommendation by a colleague. I booked the table, for 10, on Dec 26th, confirming that the Early Bird menu was available on this date and that a complimentary bottle of prosecco would be included, as advertised on their website. We arrived at a very busy restaurant at approx 6.20pm and were shown to our table promptly. After the entire party had arrived we were each given a complimentary glass of prosecco and handed our menus. We all chose from the Early Bird menu, which was fantastic value and ordered a couple of bottles of wine. I had the fishcakes to start, which were topnotch, followed by the risotto which was cooked to perfection. Another member of the party commented on the quality of the pork. We then ordered dessert and after some confusion and delay the waitress produced a beautiful dessert for another member of the party and I. Overall the food was very well received. My only issue with the night was the delay between courses and confusion among the waiting staff which I would attribute to understaffing. Despite the fact that a member of our party had rang ahead to arrange the birthday dessert there was incredible confusion over this on the night, which was slightly disappointing. However, for the food and general courtesy and professionalism of the staff, I will be returning to Café Novo

booked today for lunch for 6 Adults and 2 kids, Place was buzzing, lots of families. Interiors are excellent, very industrial, brickwork on show, great images on the walls, funky lights and comfy seating. No kids menu which is silly considering the amount of families there today. Waited 1/2 hour to get served, we had to go find someone to take our order. Another 40 mins to get Main course(no one ordered a starters) All Food was luke warm. I ordered Steak, Onion rings were very greasy, Steak as I said was luke warm but delish, French fries were very similar to Mc Donalds fries(yuck). When we had finished we waited another 20 min to get our table cleared and get dessert menus (again I had to make a fuse to get waitress attention to do both). Need to work on service and timings, Shame considering the Steak was so tasty!!!

Booked pre-theatre menu through menu pages. On arrival told time had changed -latest booking now 7pm on Fri. As this was not reflected on menu pages we were allowed avail of it. However, then told menu had changed - very limited selection now on offer - and no burger!!! Very disappointing as I had been raving about it to my friend, who had travelled from Kildare to meet me & was dying to try Cafe Novo. We opted for the fish & chips - only to be told they had run out!!!! At 7.30pm on a Friday night - with a very limited menu - not good enough. Starter of pate disappointing - tasteless & 2 slices of bread not very fresh. Main course of chicken on bed of mash with mushrooms not much better - mash lukewarm & dish very bland. Dessert of brownie nice - but at that stage we were fed up. Only positive I can say about this meal was the waiter who served us- professional and friendly. I have been a regular customer in Cafe Novo but can safely say this was my last visit. Have a feeling management won't really care - as no sign of anybody ever in charge when I've been there. Already mentioned in last review that name on front of restaurant almost invisible - still remains the same. And please update your profile on Menupages - i.e. new time for pre-theatre menu and new pre-theatre menu - as it stands it's very misleading.
