My heart nearly skipped a beat whilst they were doing up my lovely Birchalls. Ok, the place did need a refurb. but I was terrified, they were going to wreck its character like they have with other pubs in the area. I needn't have worried, the place has been refurbed, but kept its old world charm. I particularly like the mix of people in this bar, from students to people in their 80s. Definitely, the best pub in Ranelagh, they serve basic toasted sandwiches too, which can be hard to find in this panini laden market.

Used to come here for lunch pretty regularly before the renovations started. Toasted sandwiches here were delicious, would recommend just for that. The atmosphere was always good and pleasant. Well recommended.

OK, if you're over 35 and are wondering where to head to for a pint in Ranelagh at night, head into Birchalls. It’s a pub that really comes into its own at night. I love the mix of people and the fact that at 46 I actually feel young in the place! It has a great buzz and a lovely old bar feeling. During the day, it is a little sterile. We have had sandwiches there and they were nice though I berated them for charging 1.50 for a glass of milk! It is being refurbished at the moment; so I hope they make it cosier without ruining the lovely old world bar feel.
