Overall Rating:

Found on Dublin’s south side, in Cabinteely, La Rouge offers a small but specialist menu of age- perfected steaks. It’s a 28-seater grill and wine bar with a cosy interior, full of red velvets that give a boudoir feel.

It may emulate the style of a corner cafe near Notre Dame, but all products are sourced locally. Proprietor Ann Marie Nohl, she of Expresso Cafe, Mary’s Road fame, has created a “quirky” wine list with promises of new and interesting wines.

La Rouge Wine Bar and Grill 0.0.0 star review: Went to La Rouge a few weeks ago and it was extremely disappointing. I opted for the steak and when it was served with cold bernaise sauce I asked to have it re-heated and was grumpily told by the waitress that bernaise sauce is served cold as the chef is aftraid it will split when heated - cold bernaise sauce is not too appetising Mr. Chef.! My husband went for the fish and it was over-cooked - all in all a disappointing night out. As a local, within walking distance, I would like to support this restaurant but unfortunately after 3 disappointing meals I will not be returning.

La Rouge Wine Bar and Grill 1.0 star review: Been there three times and ripped off twice. Never again.

Last Tuesday there was a special offer of two courses plus a bottle of house wine for €50. Having opted to go 'off piste' by ordering a better bottle of wine I was charged the full whack for it and no credit for the house wine not taken.

The food on each occasion was mediocre, certainly not in the same league as Pielow's just down the street, where I have yet to be disappointed. Pity was closed on Tuesday.

La Rouge Wine Bar and Grill 2.5 star review: Ok, went here last night for the second time. First time here was good, did what it said on the tin, had a nice steak dinner. Last night however.... oh golly. Arrived on time to find no table, that was fine. We said we'd go and have a drink and come back in 20 minutes. So we got back and our table was ready, staff were lovely and we were hungry. Now comes the horror. The food in this place is typical french bistro type food, it should be a straight forward affair. Trouble is, if the chef is blagging then it becomes unpleasant. My wife ordered a goats cheese starter, seared with leaves, fine. I had french onion soup, the cheesy cruton was fine, the soup was just awful. It's a simple dish and at 8 euro you'd expect it to be made properly. Onions were translucent and liquid was watery and tasteless. I told them it was awful and they were receptive. I didn't bother with anything else. For our mains, my wife had trout and I had duck. My wife had the trout as an alternative to the bream which was unavailable. It was supposed to come with crispy leeks, fondant potato, saffron and champagne veloute. It came with raw mange tout and a split cream sauce. I ordered the duck confit. Duck confit should fall off the bone, very tender and crispy and golden. Again, a simple dish with the main ingredient being patience. I was given a tough leg of duck which was either roasted or very quickly deep fried. It certainly was confit. It was served with white bean cassoulet, sauce soubise, micro herbs (or so it said on the menu). Cassoulet is a slow cooked casserole, this was not. Soubise is a béchamel-based sauce containing strained or puréed onions, this was not. I don't really care for micro herbs with a peasant dish such as confit duck. The beans were almost raw and the sauce was, well I don't actually know. It did contain bacon which at least gave it some flavor. We were given some overly buttered lumpy mashed potato to share. In short, the menu was a lie! I felt I was taken for a ride.

La Rouge Wine Bar and Grill 4.0 star review: Went to La Rouge on Friday last - our first visit to this restaurant. We opted for the early bird menu and when i asked for my starter to be changed somewhat due to medication, there was no problem. The food was delicious, atmosphere really nice and the staff could not be friendlier or more effecient. All in all it was a lovely experience

La Rouge Wine Bar and Grill 5.0 star review: Ate in La Rouge last weekend with my husband. Had a thoroughly enjoyable experience from beginning to end. The room itself is warm and inviting, The staff were really friendly, the service was attentive but not intrusive. I had the french onion soup which was absolutely delicious and the fillet steak, This had been recommended by a friend who eats here regularly and believes its the 'go-to place' for steak and I couldn't disagree, it was melt in the mouth! Didnt go for desert but there were lots of tempting options, will save that for my next visit. Well thought out wine menu and a good espresso to finish. Particularly given the quality of the meat I thought it was good value and will definitely be back.

La Rouge Wine Bar and Grill 4.0 star review: So, me and my wife ate here the other night. The staff were excellent and friendly. Everyone seems to be taken with the value of this place, I'm not so sure. We were not there for the early bird, but the prices for that looked competitive. However, the a la carte menu from which we ordered, I thought was a tad over-priced. The menu is simple enough and offers the kind of masculine french food I really enjoy. The quality of the food was good but for me, the both courses I ordered were ok but not great. The sauce with my starter lacked depth and flavor and the main was distinctly under seasoned, while my side was completely over seasoned.
Would we go back? Well yeah, I would like to go again and try the early bird. I'm hopeful my experience would be better. oh, and they perhaps should invest in a decent coffee machine, they only serve filtered coffee.
All in all I would like to love this place, it's local and has a charming and intimate little dining room with a nice view of the pass. I think they're on the right track.

La Rouge Wine Bar and Grill 5.0 star review: Ate here at 18.45 with my wife last Friday. Fist thing that srtikes you is the politeness of the staff. They explained everything and were very helpful. Two menus available, including good value earlybird. Daily specials were written up for all to see and competitively priced. Food was very good, piping hot and service thorough. Good experience overall and I would definitely recommend it for an evening out.
