I arrived here with 5 other people for a birthday dinner. I was very pleased to see a lot of people in the restaurant. The food was fabulous and the atmosphere was great. We all ate from the set menu and at the bottom of the menu in very small writing was 10% tip on parties of 4 or more. I didnt really pay much heed to this until the bill came. On the bill below the total price of food was the price of the tip. I was disgusted to see this as its at the customers discretion to leave a tip. The waitress was adament we pay the tip as its house policy. We leave quite enough money in the restaurant and didnt think it was very fair to tell us how much of a tip we had to leave. I mean it was no fancy place like the Ritz. I was very disappointed when leaving and will not be returning!!

I have eaten here about 5 times in 2 years. Only had one burnt steak experience and generally tend to enjoy the flavours. They have a sister restaurant in Kells, which I thought was terrible and crowded to the point of torture. But not this place. The Side Door specialises in everything you'd expect from a grill, steaks, chicken, curries, fajitas, pizzas but it has a classier edge to it. The staff are extremely polite and seem to enjoy working (not joking) It genuinely seems to be a fast paced work hard play hard fun atmostphere and it shows in the clean glasses, extra napkins without asking, correct knife and fork and service when you need it. Lovely atmosphere in here. They have really wierd shaped chips like they are scooped out with an apple corer or something small and round but it works - they are crispy and fluffy and always hot. Our sides arrived about 3 or 4 minutes after our dinners this time. Not impressed. I don't touch the food until it all arrives but we caved in after 3 mins. Everything tasted great. They have nice chicken wings, falling off the bone but I thought they were doused in water or something as they were a teensy bit soggy. Still tasted nice though. The man had potato skins - not something I'd ever order but I tasted them and they were full of flavour and the cheese was actual cheese not that plastic stuff you might see in other places. The mains were surf and turf for both of us and I couldn't fault it except for the delay in getting side dishes. Really delicious and good quality steak and 5 juicy prawns. No fat. A huge vat of garlic butter on each plate - a bit much for anyone to consume - buy some smaller ramekins I would suggest. Very tasty garlic potatoes and all plates were hot hot hot - my pet hate is cold plates so they won points for that. Waitress was lovely and called back a few times without being in your face. We didn't have dessert as we were full. Now for the bad points: I find it quite expensive here (usually about 70+ for basic 2 course for 2 people plus glass of wine). While

This is my third time to little gem. The food is fab , the manager who i hear is well known in the Navan area for football is courteous and very efficient like the rest of his staff. This resturant definitly deserves my rating for excellence and Cavan is lucky to have such quality

Ate in The Side Door last Saturday night. Had never been to it before and as I am with all new places was very dubious. Needn't have been. On entering atmosphere was electric, real Saturday night fever like old times and not what is like in the present economic climate. Food was just delicious and I would say you would ahve to be very fussy if you didn't get something you liked. Service was excellent. No delays, or hanging about waiting on courses. I felt it was very good value and was an excellent night out. Would recommend this spot to anyone.

We have eaten here several times in the last 6 years and every time, well, it is a diffrent experience, sometimes good, sometimes, well....The last 2 times we have been there for dinner, they have had a diffrent cook, you can sure tell. The food has sure went down hill for the prices that they are charging. I usually order the fajitas, this last time, Iam pretty sure that they should of been labled as veggie fajitas, there were honestly 4 small pieces of beef in a LOAD of veggies. I am all for the 5 a day, but add in the 6 th also....MEAT! I ordered the seafood chowder as a starter, last time I checked, when you put the FROZEN seafood into the soup, make sure it is not still frozen! I feel that we have given this place more then enough "2nd chances"...sorry, we will not be back.

went here for the early bird meal, not a lot of choice on the menu so we both ordered steak...it was the fattiest steak i had ever tasted. i complained to the waitress but she didnt seem interested, i complained again when i was paying the bill but the manageress just told me that it was because it was sirloin and not fillet that it was so fatty, i'm not joking, 75% of it was fat, she suggested i only buy fillet any more (which i usually do anyway) because its less fatty and she said i should have complained when i was eating my dinner, i said i did but to no avail and she apologised. none of the rest of the food was amazing either, i definitely wont go back. there wasnt much atmosphere either, not recommended.

Ate here with a group of friends on a very busy saturday night before Christmas. The decor is similar to a lot of modern restaurants so with all the hard surfaces, when full it is very noisy, when empty it is echoy. Saturday night as expected was thronged and therefore very noisy. The side door does a good early menu available until 7.30 but as we ate at 9 we were too late to avail of this menu. I chose the chicken wings which at 7.95 are pricey and quite frankly disappointing..too sticky. Other starters were the garlic mushrooms, brie and goats cheese. Portions are on the small side and at approx 8.50 are expensive for what you get. Mains were chicken fajitas, pizza, beef stir fry (all good) and steaks. At 27 euro the steaks were tiny. In all the food was good but nothing special and for what we paid you would be right to expect better, particularly when there are other restaurants locally offering more imaginative food for the same money. Service was prompt and efficient and we were offered complimentary Irish coffees at the end of the meal which was a nice touch.

When we visit our family in Cavan we usually take a visit to the Side Door as I always like the atmosphere in the restaurant. We went early, 6.30pm, as we had our 5 year old daughter with us. The staff were lovely and very efficient. We were going to choose from the Early Bird Menu but the choice was very limited. After ordering our starters, a group arrived with a crying baby. We had our starters of Garlic Mushrooms, which were delicious and the Deep Fried Brie again delicious but were too distracted by the noise to fully enjoy. We asked to be moved to the other end of the restaurant to try and hear ourselves speak. The staff were very understanding and apologetic. Our main courses were good, I order the Roast Vegetable Calzonette, which had a little too much vegetables, I had to leave half behind. My partner ordered the burger and asked for pepper sauce, which never appeared. Our daughter thoroughly enjoyed her pizza. The restaurant was practically full by the time we'd had our main course but most tables around us were talking about the baby crying very loudly. The staff continued to apologise for the noise but explained there was nothing they could do about it. We received complimentary Irish Coffees as an apology for the disruption but to be honest I'm not sure I'd be back for a while.
